hi - hoping for some advice.
my dads 69 - his dad died of prostate cancer in his 60s. he's always had psa checks and his levels have been around 3-4. he previously had an mri in january 2022 which was clear but with a psa density of 1.2 - he had his psa repeated & his level came back at 7.72 - he was immediately referred back to urology . he was given another mri scan - now i am medically trained to a certain point but i haven't seen the radiology report - all we have been told is there is an area of shadowing/abnormal area with a density of 0.21 the volume was 35mls and a PI RAD of 4 - he has been for his biopsy today - apparently 3 biopsies were taken but they were core biopsies so unsure if this is multiple tissue samples but 3 cores - the radiologist who did the biopsy today said it could be cancer or it could be inflammation? but the specialist nurse went through all the treatments Asif it was highly likely he has cancer - very confusing and upsetting. he doesn't have any pain - only symptom he has is getting up to toilet in the night when he didn't used to. just a concerned daughter here that is worried about her dad. theyv told us 2-3 weeks for results which feels like hell, i generally thought MRI were good at telling the difference between inflammation and abnormalities? il also add that he did have contrast with the MRI .
any advice would be great
thankyou
Hello ABPXXX55b56d
Welcome to the group although I am so sorry to find you joining us. At this stage all I would say is:
* A PSA of 7.72 isn't very high but it's raised.
* If they only took 3 core samples at the biopsy it sounds like they were "targeted" samples and they are not particularly worried about the rest of the prostate.
* PI -RADS 4 on an MRI is a clear view of the prostate and a good chance of there being cancer in the gland.
My advice is to take it easy, wait for the biopsy results and once you have a diagnosis it should be easily treatable on a "curative pathway",
Best wishes - Brian.

Hi A
Ok so it may be cancer , obviously not Def, but looks like a low key affair, PSA not particularly high and at this point looks confined to the gland, hopefully will be a low Gleeson.
One more question u could ask , if there is something showing in the gland can they give you the size in mm cos obviously the smaller the better, I would imagine it is not a large one
Best wishes
Steve
My husband knew more than he was letting on about the liklihood of having cancer. He never wants people to worry.
That is a long result wait. I would call regularly.
If he's had regular monitoring, chances are if it's cancer, it's getting caught early which is good.
Hi,
It’s natural to be nervous when I comes to your dad, but if you put yourself in his slippers I guess you’d be more comfortable while there are only a few tests without many symptoms. In fact if you were at work you might put him on the side ward and leave him until the reports are back.
What I’m saying is that with your training and knowledge you’ll know when over anxious family are struggling with the fact that there’s no facts, which means it could be anything. Let’s be honest, it’s possible it’s nothing. I hope so.
I know you’re just being prepared for any eventuality and your Dad might be leaning on you for support. But we will be here when the data come in and support both of you. Keep us informed. But until then, don’t guess, wait for the raw data and hold your dad’s hand while calming him from wild speculation of horrible consequences. Just live your lives day to day and forget all the guessing. You are in the here and now so enjoy today.
Good luck.
How long did it take from biopsy for your husband to recieve his results?
Hello ABPXXX55b56d
Yes, once you get the biopsy results, unless they want to do any further testing you should have another meeting and a full diagnosis and treatment plan provided.
It gets easier once you have all the answers.
Best wishes - Brian.

It seems to take over 2 weeks at least as I presume the cultures are slow growing.

Please remember that I am not medically trained and the above are my personal views.
I don't remember exactly but it was days, not weeks.
