Good morning
can I ask another question please ?
It’s now the third week since my dad finished his radiotherapy
and he’s having trouble sleeping as in none at all most nights
but also feeling nauseous, he is taking tamulosin so I’m wondering if it’s the side effects from this . Clatterbridge did say that the second, third and fourth week after treatment
is the worst. Just asking if anyone else has experienced these symptoms and roughly how long they will last
thanks again sorry to keep mithering
best wishes Lesley
Thank you Kevan
My dad was struggling going to the toilet several times at night and in pain so the nurse put him on tamulosin if Iv spelt it right
which seem to have been a massive help
take care
Hi Lesleymak77 sorry to hear your dad is not sleeping well, it is quite debilitating. We all react differently to our treatments and there isn’t really a normal. RT isn’t so much about the instant treatment but it delivers a load which goes on working for months and years. Initially, it can upset areas around the delivery zone and typically cause upset stomach and even blood in stools which can be disconcerting. Having said all that, going through RT is quite emotional particularly the first few weeks after you finish. So in some ways, feeling nauseous is not an entirely unexpected result. It is important however, to report all symptoms to the team and often they are able to help.
You mentioned that your dad is on Tamsulosin which can cause both drowsiness and sleeplessness (how is that possible!). Tamsulosin is an amazing drug and has almost instant effect, but my own personal view is that it is too often re prescribed without looking at what it is trying to combat. I would try and cut the dosage down and potentially drop it all together very very gradually (please see my disclaimer at the end).
Don’t forget that your dad is also on HT and that can cause emotional changes and problems sleeping as well. I guess the usual recommendations about diet and avoiding coffee at night, but I find if I can’t sleep I need to get up and wait till I feel tired before going back to bed. Lying in bed awake for hours seems to make me feel worse than if managed to get a good couple of hours sound sleep. Hopefully others will come along with sleeping hints of their own.
Finally please ask whatever questions you have. The group on here are amazing and are rarely unable to help.
Best wishes, David

Hi Lesleymak77 your previous post came in while I was writing my reply. I do understand how good (and absolutely necessary) Tamsulosin is to relieve symptoms but unless the plan is to stay on Tamsulosin for ever, how can you tell when it should be stopped? That is what I was getting at. The danger is that it gradually fits into the norm. Again, just my personal view.
Best wishes, David
