During the last week of my 4 week radiation treatment, I started to get a lot of pain when peeing during the night. I’m now a week after the end of the treatment and the pain has been extreme with cramping etc, before I can start peeing. So I’ve had 2 weeks of this, with getting up for a pee every 90 minutes or so during the night. This has really been getting me down. When I asked the nurse at the hospital, she suggested paracetamol. No effect. I am also taking 1000mg of Naproxen (Ibuprofen) every day for arthritis, but this has no effect on the bladder pain either. The nurse said I can’t take CoCodamol as it can cause constipation. I was getting desperate. So I spoke to the GP 2 days ago, and he prescribed potassium citrate tablets. Miraculous!!! Today I’m so happy- no pain at all last night!!! The problem was the acidity in the urine, aggravating the inflamed bladder. The tablets are mainly for cystitis pain, and make the urine more alkaline. I just wish the hospital had told me about this earlier. This information should also be on the MacMillan pages for prostate cancer - bladder pain relief.
The med is Effercitrate. Another one is Cystopuren. Both available over the counter!!! Win win!!! Try it…..
Good luck, chaps!!!
Hello Stef2b9351
Thank you for the post - great news your pain has been sorted out. Long may you be pain free with a low PSA.
I will pass the details of your medical intervention on to the information team - I assume this will be checked by the Macmillan Professionals before it's included in any publication but I have added the information to my reference bank.
Best wishes - Brian.

Hi Stef2b9351 , that’s a great post and I am sure will help others. The problem we face when having painful peeing is we tend to drink less, but generally with a UTI or acid, less fluid intake the more concentrated the pee is and the worse it is. How long have you been prescribed for?
Best wishes, David
Please remember that I am not medically trained and the above are my personal views.
Thank you David. I have been given 4 days worth. I will get some more after that, but at some point I will try doing without them to see if my bladder has calmed down a bit. The dosage in the boxes at the Pharmacy (also for Cistopuren) is for 2 days. This is because it’s mainly used for cystitis, which I’m assuming would clear up after a couple of days, with antibiotics?
Hi Agent99,
Yes I was told that too - but I hadn’t had any of those drinks for weeks! Didn’t make any difference, unfortunately.
