  • Hi Dellboy

I am no pro but eventually the cancer within the gland will break out and spread elsewhere.

  • Good Morning

Welcome to the Macmillan Online Prostate Community, although I am so sorry to find you here.

The Community is made up entirely of none professionals as it's a peer to peer support platform so sadly you aren't going to get an answer from a professional here.

Steve  above is correct though. If the cancer stays within the gland it's not going to kill you, it's when it leaves the gland and goes "walkabout" and messes with your other vital organs that problems happen.

I do hope that helps, if you want to expand on your question, we will see what we can do for you.

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Hi,

I'm far from professional but I'd like to add my few pence worth.

I had prostate cancer and it's now returned - so I've got what they call 'recurrent prostate cancer'.

I'm told that when prostate cancer returns, it won't return to the prostate, because that area will have already been radiated and treated - so it's stray cells that are scattered around the prostate bed that are involved in recurrent situations.

But those stray cells can be anywhere - in the prostate bed; in the tissue, in the lymph glands; in the blood or in the bones.  Only a CAT-CT scan can find them.

Sadly however, sometimes the cells may already have spread out and will have settled in other organs - although if they've been keeping a close eye on your PSA levels then that probably won't have happened yet - fingers crossed.

However, there are some pretty aggressive means of controlling it - hormone therapy seems to head the list.  There are obviously several other ways of controllling it too - that haven't been discussed with me by my consultant.

But what he did say that calmed me.  He said, "You will eventually die WITH the cancer, not BECAUSE of it."  Take that statement to heart if any of the above refers to you, please.

    Best wishes

    Chris

I take my wife everywhere, but she keeps finding her way back.

  • Thanks for the contact!!  My Euroligist doesn't talk to me... its the Radiotherapy or nothing, I've got very low key cancer...  but I live on the isle of wight and I have to go off the island daily for treatment!!!  They haven't discussed any other treatment...  or though ime having Hormone treatment....  its so hit and miss here!!!

  • I would love to have a Partner... she died of Cancer 10 years ago!!!!

  • Hello

If I remember correctly people travelling from The Isle of Wight to Portsmouth for Radiotherapy get:

    * The free minibus (Daisy Bus) to and from Southsea to Portsmouth hospital.

    * Reduced ferry fares Ryde to Southsea.

If you haven't got these details let me know and I will find them for you. The other option would be to have a short "holiday" on the mainland.

    Best wishes - Brian.
