Hi all hope everyone is ok I start my rt treatment in 8 weeks time I have 4 weeks of it my pc is confined to the gland with a score of 3 plus 4  I have not had the meeting yet to tell me what happens etc and have read some slightly worrying stories ie incontinence etc and what happens on the morning you have the treatment any info and advice would me greatly appreciated........mace

  • Hi Mace,

It's funny how we all worry about ''bottom embarrassment '' things & using an enema easily falls into that category.  However, it's actually not a big thing at all.

The hospital gave me an ample supply of them before my RT began & I had to start using them 2 days before the first treatment & then each day after with a break each weekend in between.  They were what is known as micro enemas so are very small & easy to use & quickly become plain sailing.

If it helps at all you can read my journey by clicking on the coffee cups next to my name,

    Best Wishes

    Brian

  • Hi my OH is currently having 6.5 weeks of RT now on week 3.  He had to use the micro enemas for the first 5 days only and had no problems with them.  So far he has only suffered from fatigue but is also on HT which can also cause this.   No problem so far with the waterworks and just a slightly loose bowel for which he has been perscribed fibrogel.  Like yourself we were really worried about the side effects we had heard about but so far so good.  Its the travelling to the hospital everyday thats more of a pain.  Good luck and hope all goes well

  • Thank you and good luck to you guys

  • I only had to use an enema for my set up appointment.  After that, I was “loose” each morning (partly fight or flight response) so didn’t need any micro enemas for 22 fractions of RT. They didn’t give me any as they said it can inflame the bowel and so their policy was of it’s not needed don’t give it. Ironically, I needed on for the 23rd fraction after they said there was a slight obstruction when they did the pre scan on the LINAC. I hopped off, took an enema, drank some water and 30 mins later I was back on the LINAC.  I agree with previous posters: micro enemas, if needed, are no problem.  AW
