Public transport for repeated hospital visits (esp RT)

Perhaps my rail trips to hospital for RT were a bit longer than "average" - 45 miles each way, but could I offer a couple of tips to keep the costs down.1. Consider getting a railcard if you don't already have one, this gives you 33% off (all/most of) your rail fares.  2. Have a look for "Rover" tickets covering your route. (not a Season ticket)

I had a railcard and used Rover tickets. Firstly, read the Ts & Cs attached to these items. My Rover could not be used before 0900 so I spoke to the treatment hospital and all my bookings were then made for early pm. I used rail 20 times out of 22 trips, the Rover covered 16 of those. The "Full Fare" tickets were £37 per day. With my railcard and Rover I paid just under £10 per day.  Trips on the buses were free on my bus pass. The two trips by car got a "capped" parking rate - both on a Saturday, so plenty of spaces at the hospital !!

  • Hello

Cracking post - thank you. Just a reminder, some hospitals such as mine (The Christie - Oldham) offer free gated parking for people on Radiotherapy Treatment.

If you can't get free parking - for peace of mind there are "Parking Apps" where you can rent someone's drive or parking space near the hospital.

    Thank again for your support.

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Thanks  , Southampton Hospital cap the car park at £2 per day (if you can find a space) if you are on RT but you need to ask.

    Best wishes, David

  • Hello David2017

you don't need to ask, they have a little machine on the Radiotherapy reception desk to change the fee due on your ticket to the capped rate. Finding a parking space is a problem though, that is why I only drove down twice - both times on a Saturday.
