Hi all my partner has his first appointment with the oncologist tomorrow dont really know what to expect or what questions we might need to ask

Bryan has been on bicaculmide for about 6 weeks which is now finshed and he’s had one hormone injection due another one in may

Bryan is waiting to hear about RT we are due to go holiday 28th April for 10 days and worried it may effect us going can it be postponed til we come back so he can have a good time before it all starts thanks x

  • sorry Clare - it was advised not to travel for 6-8 weeks after radiotherapy not hormone therapy. I was typing in haste! Sorry for the confusion. We were told that the RT carries on working after the RT sessions had been completed and problems could rear their ugly head in that time . When I asked what problems the one quoted was urinary retention!

That said, my husband's only problem was brain fog and tiredness!

We have had travel insurance attached to our bank account throughout this PC journey. This year they have increased the standard premium given the risks - first time, though! We have worldwide annual cover (including basic cruise cover) for the year for £18 per month plus, this year. £200 extra to cover my husband and myself for pre-existing illnesses.

If you havent already done so, might it be a good idea to let your insurance company know about your husband's diagnosis? I often read about cases where travel insurance companies try anything to get out of paying a claim!

Enjoy your holiday. I hope you are going to somewhere nice?

  • Hi Clare.  I'd like to add my support to the idea of telling the consultant you have a holiday booked for x date and could they please plan any treatment to be after then.  That's what I did, although it was before a holiday starting on 8 May.  I saw him in January and he said " yes, we can plan it in before then, so that if you do have any side effects, they should be gone by then".  Unless it's very urgent he starts treatment,  I think most consultants are happy to help you keep your life as comfortable as possible.

  •   no problem I thought that was the case but wanted to just clarify sorry if I sounded off lol I booked the holiday last year and only just got travel insurance couple of weeks ago so when I got the travel insurance I added the pc diagnoses then we are off to protarus Cyprus for 10 days so be nice and warm lol can’t wait tbh we need it x

  • Have a truly wonderful holiday! WE did go away 6 weeks after the RT had completed. It was the best holiday ever! I think we appreciated it after such a torrid time with the PC diagnosis and treatment! I like Cyprus! WE have stayed in both Paphos and Limassol and have visited the Protaras area.

  • You will have had your oncology appointment now so this reply is a bit late but my husband is in exactly the same position as you although because of a big celebratory family occasion on the horizon rather than a holiday. His oncologist was adamant that any treatment could and should be arranged around any events where it could get in the way of having the best time. Do hope that yours has told you the same and you are now busy buying your  suncream and new bikini (unless you're going ski-ing in which case forget the bikini) Slight smile

  • Hi all thank you for the lovely responses this site has been a god send to us this last couple of sh*t months everyone is so kind and help so thank u xx

    So little update from appointment

The oncologist showed us all the scans that bryan has had said he’s had a full work up and is happy he’s healthy other than pc was amazing to see scans scrolled though his whole body head to toe something u don't see everyday lol Joy everything was clear no cancer anywhere else which is very good news for us yay Raised hands

The cancer had started to break the capsule but said its not that aggressive and he’s happy it can be sorted with  the hormone and the radio he’s on the right track and pathway and his psa should drop down to nothing which has been such a relief to hear

Was told Bryan has to stay on hormone injection for three years which I was shocked about as seems a long time but if it gets rid of what’s left of the bugger we don’t care

We then spoke about radiotherapy and the holiday he was happy to start the treatment as soon as we got back but will have to do all the prep before and has got to go for a CT scan before we go but so so happy we can go as been looking forward to it since last year and can have a good time before all the sh*tty treatment starts so all in all a good outcome and put my mind at ease as it’s definitely been a difficult few months of stress and anxiety of not knowing what’s to come x

sorry for the long post hope I haven’t bored anyone but thank u all xx

  • That's great news.  Good luck with the treatment when it comes and enjoy the holiday!
