I have been on HT for a couple of months, for locally advanced Pca, and am expecting to receive RT in the future.
Urine flow has been negatively affected, due to swelling of the prostate, and I am taking Alfuzosin tablets. The side effects of this med is causing awful side effects.
I am due to have a Flow Test next week and am concerned that urinary problems may impact RT.
Questions:
Will a slow urinary flow/urinary retention prevent RT, or is there an alternative treatment for this cancer?
Is catheterisation a solution?
Has anyone out there had the experience of catheterisation for RT? If so would you kindly advise how this was utilised in your case?
I am really worried that the RT will be cancelled because of my urinary problems.
Thank-you very much.
Hi Dartmoor,
Sorry to hear about the problems you are currently having with the side effects of Alfuzosin. Whilst I can't specifically answer your questions, I think the best thing you can do is when you go for your flow test next week to advise them of the problems you are having with urine flow & the side effects of the current drug you are on. It may well be that there is another drug you can take which achieves the same aim but without the side effects.
Best Wishes
Brian
Hello Dartmoor
Poor flow caused by an enlarged Prostate can be cured by a TURP operation. Click on my avatar for details as that was one of my issues. Whilst waiting for the TURP I had an indwelling catheter.
Radiotherapy cannot be considered whilst you have a catheter.

Hi Dartmoor. I can put your mind at ease on the poor flow/catheter/RT issue. I have poor flow/no flow following HRD Brachytherapy two weeks ago. Catheter went in, came out after a week and then 5 hours later went back in because I still couldn't pee. I've just had my second fraction of RT (of 15) and no one worried or made any adjustments because if it. So if that's the way you have to go, it's absolutely fine. If nothing else, you know you've fully emptied your bladder when that's what they want before filling it up again! The fun bit is having the catheter dangling and swinging whilst you're walking around in the RT suite!! It makes for a good story for later.... hope that helps. Peter
