Prostate Cancer - RT and HT treatment side effects

Its been a while since I posted.   I started HT in January 2024 and had 20 sessions of RT in May/June 2024.  I'm on 6 monthly injection of Decapeptyl (I've had 3 injections so far, another 3 to go.  I was originally diagnosed with aggressive PC (Gleason 4+5=9) in October 2023 but had to wait until January 2024 to start my treatment because of the need for a bone scan and a PET scan.  I wasn't offered any other treatment because of my age (75 at the time).

The RT resulted in bowel problems. For a while this was quite severe. I couldn't leave my house for several months but it gradually improved. I still have to be careful but I'm largely uneffected by this now.  Side effects from the HT increased gradually. They included fatique, hot flushes, muscle loss, weight gain, lack of concentration, a range of body pains as well as ED.  My weight remained the same for nearly a year but suddenly over the last 4 months I have gone from 10 st 4 oz to 12 stone 2 oz.

I've tried going to the gym and have started playing golf again (my course was too wet following floods last November). I use a buggy to get around on the golf course. I'm still very tired at the end but I enjoy it and keep going.  The gym was good but then at Xmas I caught a bad cold which lasted nearly 4 weeks (I think my immune system was low). When i returned to the gym I found it much harder. Some weights which I could lift before Xmas I can't get near now.

Weight gain is a massive problem for me. Apart from my clothes not fitting I find all exercise that much harder.  Gaining nearly 20% in weight isn't easy to deal with.  If I could reduce my weight I think I'd feel much better but I don't really know how to do this. I eat healthily. Any ideas would be welcome.

This post may be seen as quite negative but I feel I'm dealing with it well. I get on with things.  I enjoy my hobbies and interests (golf, photography and music). My wife has been great.

  • Hi Coltrane

HT is causing me similar problems.

I found that using an exercise bike helped me to build stamina, whilst assisting in weight loss.  Using the bike also took weight off my joints.

    I hope that helps.

    Best wishes,

    Very best wishes -

  • Hi Coltrane

I felt like I was reading about my husband here!! All the same timings and very similar treatment other than he had less RT and has injections once every 3 months.  He has also put on weight and has slowed down over the past year.  He has always been a slim man and I now worry about other health issues with weight gain, he is too tired to go to the gym.  He has given up his golf membership as wasn’t playing enough.  He has only just started doing work on the house again which is a good sign although I have to tell him to not do too much as he is still working.  We have had to adapt our lifestyle and don’t go out as much.  He also has lost a lot of strength which I think is the medication.

with regard to the weight my husband has been told he has high cholesterol so we are trying to cut out anything high in saturates and eat more fruit when snacking.  I’ve cut out all his crisps and pork pies (yes he could eat whatever he wanted before he was diagnosed) and replacing with low fat yoghurts and fruit and he seems to have lost a little.  He is struggling with this too as always been able to eat what he likes!  I’ve always been told a healthy diet is the way to lose weight although I feel exercise makes me feel good so may be carry on at gym and just look at improving your daily diet.

have you thought about pilates for toning rather than weights, just a thought.

best wishes and don’t be too hard on yourself
