Diagnosed yesterday with gleason 6 PC

Hi All

So went to the NHS hospital in Stamford, Lincs yesterday for my biopsy results, was trying to keep optimistic as my PSA when measured in December was only 1.47, but the MRI did find a pirads 4 lesion.  My biopsy was targeted on the suspect lesion and 10 or the 25 cores came back showing cancer.  As the cancer is fully contained and small and my PSA is only 1.47, I was told radical options are not on the table and AS is the way forward.

I have not been given metrics such as prostate size/weight/lesion size, only told it is gleason 6, very slow growing, fully contained, T2a (only on left side of prostate) and it's unlikely to change.  I will have quarterly PSA tests and an annual MRI.

A shock to the system, as this was only picked up randomly from a work Bupa Health MOT which did a DRE and detected something and subsequently an MRI was done.  If I had gone the same way as most, my PSA would be classed as good and I'd be sent on my way for a year or two...

  • Hi  , that’s a great result and all being well the end of the story.  Just make sure you monitor from here on but you are all set to start the next cancer free chapter!   Best wishes, David

  • Whatever the numbers, the C word is a kick in the guts, but as David2017 said, Gleason 6 and AS is a really big positive in the negative! Good luck with everything and here’s hoping it stays the same as time goes on!

  • Well done.  Although the result is not the ideal one, if you are going to receive a positive diagnosis this outcome is towards the top end of the range.

BTW, as I understand it, a prostate size estimate is normally derived from an MRI (or preceding ultrasound if any), rather than the biopsy.

I suggest requesting the full histology report as produced by laboratory.  I was fortunate enough to receive mine from the cancer specialist nurse who I saw immediately after receiving my diagnosis from the consultant.
