Worsening incontinence

I had a radical prostatecomy in May 2022.  After a rising PSA, I had salvage radiotherapy in Sept 2024. Recovery, in terms of ED was very good and incontinence. However, now, 4 months after SR, I have increasing incontinence and bowel irritation. Is this unusual or to be expected? I was under the impression that incontinence would steadily improve along with bowel recovery.

  • Hi  , I noticed that nobody had replied, so my response will bump this back to the top.  RT seems to go on working for months (years) after treatment.  In my own case I had bleeding over a year after my RT and was diagnosed with radiation proctitus. I imagine the same might happen with your waterworks. Others on here normally recommend doing some exercises to help with bladder incontinence.  I don’t have any experience with bowel incontinence but maybe others can help. David

  • Hi David, thanks for your response. I had tenasmus, during treatment, which was painful but sorted with suppositories. The bleeding sounds horrible. I hope mine gets no worse. It is not bowel incontinence that I have, rather, just having to go several times a day wheras before RT, it was only once.

  • Hi

My treatment was 20 sessions of RT which ended mid August 2024.I have no bladder problems but my bowel does occasionally make urgent demands which I am well aware should not be ignored. I would not consider that to be incontinence but can also say that accidents do happen. From what I have understood from research this should improve with time but could potentially take many more months.

I hope that reassures you are in a similar situation to others.

  • Hello Tim (

I have pondered your question for a while before replying. I am still the owner of my Prostate as I have been down the HT/RT route but have been around the Community for 3ish years. From my reading of posts and threads here bowel irritation and increasing incontinence 4 months after surgery isn't common at all. My suggestion to you is this is a case for either your surgical team or GP to investigate as things should be much better by now.

    Best wishes - Brian

  •   , the bleeding wasn’t an issue once I understood what was causing it, but quite scary the first time it happened! Gradually it has eased off and I have now had several months without a bleed.

Reading your reply, I got the impression that your problem was more frequency than actual leakage.  Taking Brian’s ( ) point, if it is leakage, then definitely chat with your team.  If it is just frequency and urgency your GP might be able to help.

  • Hi Brian, thank you for that response. I value your experience and sharing your thoughts. I will do that.

    Kind regards

  • Hello Tim. This video popped into my inbox and I wondered if it might give you some pointers to enable you to talk to your doctor.
