Biopsy

Hi guys how long am I likely to be at the hospital for my prostate biopsy??

  •  My procedure probably took about an hour in all but don't plan to do too much too soon afterwards

  • Individual experiences will vary, but assuming that it's an NHS hospital, in my experience I'd recommend allowing a full day from hospital entry to exit.

And that assumes a local, rather than general, anaesthetic.

For a detailed report of my experience, have a look at the thread which tracks my journey so far:

  • Hi Mace

I was in the hospital for a couple of hours got asked to get something to eat and drink just in case you could feel faint, but it's not very pleasant but definitely not as bad as I thought it would be, biopsy took about 25 minutes with a local anesthetic, don't get up to much after biopsy I'd take it easy for a day or two,

    Best wishes

  • Hello

As others have said if you leave the day free there will be no issues and you will not be rushing for anything.

Here's our guide to The TP Prostate Biopsy.

I hope this helps. If I can do anything else for you please let me know.

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Mine took just under 2 hours from walking in to walking out and they apologised for keeping me waiting.  I guess it depends very much on the hospital and staffing levels.

  • Hi Mace,

It's a bit like the question ''how long is a piece of string''.  The actual biopsy doesn't take that long, & afterwards they will get you to drink something (tea or coffee in my case) & then get you to provide a sample to ensure everything is working as it should be before letting you go home.  However, it can depend on how busy they are, whether running to schedule, form filling etc that can add to the time you are there.

In all, I was there about 4 hours as they were running late, the majority of that waiting around beforehand, so I would suggest taking something to read or a tablet with you to pass the time.  One other bit of advice I was given was not to drive myself home as you might feel a bit uncomfortable afterwards so having someone to do the driving was recommended.  As it happens, I was fine & we stopped off at a restaurant on the way home for a late lunch as I was starving by that time & felt I deserved a treat.

    Best Wishes

  • Good Morning

Here's a link that should answer that question:

How to use the Forum Pages

If you want to create a new thread it's "+ Create New Post" at the top right of the page.

I hope this helps, anything else just ask - it does take time to learn how to  navigate the site.

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • My husband had a TP biopsy but our son took him as it was a short drive away and I thought he might feel a bit wobbly afterwards and not want to drive home. However he was in and out within an hour, had a wee easily and came home. The most challenging bit was explaining to our grandsons who live with us  (12 and 9) that perhaps they should go easy with Grandpa just for today as he'd had a little procedure on his private bits. I explained he felt OK as he'd been numbed in that area but then had to say that yes, perhaps they could punch him in the b***s and he wouldn't feel it,  but it probably wasn't a good idea Grimacing
