I'm new to dealing with prostate cancer and feeling a bit overwhelmed by all the dietary advice out there. How many of you are strict about your diet? I've encountered so much conflicting information on what foods are good or bad that I've had to dive into some serious research. Would love to hear your experiences and any tips you've found helpful!

  • Hi  , welcome to the club nobody wants to join.  Are you able to give a bit more info on your diagnosis?  PSA, staging TNM etc.  I am sure some of the others will be along with great advice, but it does depend a little on where you are at present.  In my own case I eat pretty well, but that won’t stop me having a curry or a pint or two now and then.  Everything in moderation.  Best wishes, David

PS try not to use Dr Google but stick to Prostate Cancer UK or MacMillan sites for sound info.

  • Ok Jonny

So here's my main thing, given up sugar, read in so many different places that sugar feeds cancer, once u get used to it u don't miss it at all.

Other things, cut back on red meat, alcohol, fizzy/fruity  drinks, takeaways and  generally ultra pro foods

It does take some time to get used to the changes, best way is to do it slowly over a period of time

    Good luck

    Steve

  • Hi Jonny.

This is what we did once diagnosed.

Firstly there are plenty of things you can eat like lots of fruit and veg, beans, pulses, chicken, turkey, fish. Try and make meals from scratch rather than buying ready meals. Wholegrain versions rather than refined.

Try to avoid sugary products, salt, processed foods, caffeine, alcohol and be careful with carbohydrates like bread, pizza and cakes/biscuits.

Keep animal fat products down like full fat cheese and milk (choose low fat versions or vegetable alternatives) and limit red meats.

Generally eat a balanced diet and everything in moderation.

Modifications may need to be made during things like radiotherapy or chemotherapy.

  • Hi Jonney,

You have had some great replies from others about all the good things you should be trying to eat / drink & also the things to avoid.

Having said all that though, I still like to enjoy the odd treat (why is it that all the naughty foods are the ones we crave?) & have had my first mince pie of the season purely so it didn't go to waste you understand Innocent.

    Best Wishes
