Hi my name is Peter

I was having treatment for an overactive bladder with prostate blood test as part of treatment which came back at 7.7.  I then had an ultrasound, GP said I had enlarged prostate but nothing of concern.  Has MRI scan as part of pathway which has revealed lesions on prostate rated 4 and 5.  Having a biopsy, no noted signs of other lesions throughout body. Notes 66.9% chance of prostate cancer and really worried and having bad anxiety and not sleeping, I have the constant peeing which I thought was my over active bladder no pain peeing small leaking and sometimes stop and start to finish,I've pretty much resigned myself to having prostate cancer and finding very tough to deal with like everyone with the horrible disease, any helpful advice would be much appreciated

Kind regards

Peter

  • Hello Peter

Member of the "empty bladder crew here". I had no issues up to about fraction 14/15 when the need to "go" increased, but after RT it got back to normal.

Don't forget though, I had a catheter until Early November 2022. My RT started in January 2023 and in November/December 2022 I had to learn to pee and learn control from scratch so "normal" people may be different.

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Hi Brian

Thanks again for your reply ,did you have the empty bladder RT because of bladder problems or was that the hospitals procedure Brian ? It's reassuring you didn't have any bladder problems after your RT

    Thanks again

  • Hello Peter (

It was standard practice at The Christie.

I asked and was told, most Radiologists go for a full bladder as it inflates it and moves it away from the prostate so they can "see it". Ours liked to deflate the bladder leaving a smaller area for error (you don't want them "zapping" your bladder) but with an empty bladder they could still "see" the prostate and it was easier on "the client".

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Hi Brian,

Thanks, really reassuring you had no awful side affects after RT. Hoping my oncologist will do the same for me. Fingers crossed

  • Hi all

Got my friends 50th birthday party tomorrow, I'm still on the tablets had first prostrap injection Wednesday, would it be OK to have 4 Guinnesses max or stick to lime and sodas  ?

    Thanks Peter

  • My opinion is a little bit of what you fancy does you good but in moderation. My husband is on Prostap and he still enjoys a wee dram twice a week. On one occasion he had it on 3 days and the oncologists comment was that it was good for the heart. The problem is that the HT tends to put weight on round the middle and Guinness is calorific. The time to really avoid alcohol is if you are having chemotherapy or radiotherapy.

    Have a great party.

  • Hello Peter (

    Here's my advice.

    * The best answer is never drink alcohol.

    * The NHS say no more than 14 units of alcohol per week spread over at least 3 days.

    * A pint of Guinness has 2.3 units (my mate drinks it and it says it on the glass).

So having taken in all the above, it's your mate's 50th birthday party, hes's not having another one. We all have cancer so we need some quality of life. I would celebrate with him, have at least 4 and enjoy the party. (not official Macmillan advice).

Life has to go on cancer or not.

I did a "dry month" when i had my radiotherapy and enjoyed it!!

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Thank you I had a few at Christmas and new year in moderation while on the tablets and was ok ,maybe a couple of lagers then might be better than Guinness, thanks again

    Peter

  • Hi Brian

Thanks for your advice I'm on strict orders from the other half to have only four pints  Smile your right life to short and it definitely won't be a regular occurrence.

    Thanks again Brian

  • Lager has more calories than Guinness so stick to the Guinness if that is the tipple you enjoy.
