Just had a conversation with specialist nurse and apparently they are going to offer OH Abiraterone at the first oncology meeting 18th July . Can anyone give me more information .

so his lymph nodes at the left seminal vesicle and there are others

I asked if there was an alternative and was told oncologist will give the best treatment . !!!!!

however , what I’ve just read does not enthuse me .

  • Hi johnam,

I think BarryW@  partner is on this drug so i tag her in and I am sure she will have some info for you. My husband is on Enzulatamide which is a bit different

    Lots of love

  • Hi Johnam,

My OH take Abiraterone, what is it that you don't like? It's hard for me to tell you about how other similar drugs perform, but this drug is very good and does the job. There are side effects = putting on weight around the tummy area, fatigue, the normal things with HT, a good exercise regime will help with this. He will have a steroid with it that will counteract other side effects. These ADT drugs are very strong, as Dafna says her husband tales a similar ADT drug Enzalutamide. There's also another couple of similar drugs. It is a good treatment it's had extensive research and is proven to extend the life of men with advanced cancer. "Stampede trial" What are your worries about this drug?

  • Hi L,,

the information  I read stated it can cause heart failure , oedema, and is used on older men . I am worried again that he’s being pigeonholed. Although he’s 73 this year he a very fit man who reversed his type 2 and has been in remission for past 5 years .

It may not cause but I always look at the negative first.

I called the SP nurse today as I remembers that a drug was mentioned and I could not remember what it was called as I need as much information as possible before we have our oncologist meeting on 18th .

thank you for taking the time to reply it’s much appreciated

  • Hi Johnam.G

Good evening yes I have been on Abiraterone now since diagnosis this time last year (2023)

My PSA beforehand was 1000+ but once I started HT (injections and tablets) it is now 0.9.

My consultant seems very happy to keep me on the HT whilst it's working well.

I know that he has mentioned chemo in the past but he seems to be worried about me currently as he thinks that I won't be strong enough???

  • Hi Prostrate Worrier,

thank you for getting touch . I’m just concerned about the side effects ax read quite a bit and can cause heart problems. Tell me off if I’m reading too much into it Liz  xx

  • I don't know much about Abiraterone and have not been prescribed it.

Something made me want to search for this, though, because I am learning that I need to reassure myself that any drugs I am taking are worth it.

I do know of the Stampede Trial, and know that Abiraterone did well in that.

On that basis I tried to find something that would give me a short summary in layman's  terms but would still be authoritative.

    I found this:

    https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/29494266/

It comes from a reputable place, supplies sources and references, and gives what I want to know to go with the dry as dust drug bulletins which say "it does this and these bits fall off"

I really hope this is helpful.

With my own therapy I know much more about what can go wrong than right.

  • Hello

Here's the NICE advice and pricing for Abiraterone. I am sure your husbands team will have looked at his medical history before the MDT meeting.

I hope this helps a little.

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Hi Johnam.

No probs any time, the only side effects that I currently experience are hot flushes and fatigue and weight gain.

But I have got tricks in my pocket that I use to help these.

Following my Stroke in 1998 at the age of 32 I have been on numerous medications the majority being very very strong.

Reading every documentation that came with the drugs always painted a horrible picture meaning me not talking any of them which wouldn't be good news all around.
