Worried about diagnosis of bone mets

Hi All,

my dad had his diagnosis today it has spread to his bones (spine, ribs, sternum and Pelvis) we were told all very small lesions. No spread in lymph nodes.

I struggled to get out of the doctor a Gleason score or staging. He said ones it’s metastatic they don’t worry too much about that - I felt like we were leading the meeting which was disappointing

He said the biopsy showed some with a score 3, 4 and 5. He mentioned M1B can anyone help us piece it together. I was hoping we would have clear information so we could compare to others.

thanks xx

  • Hello David (

It's me being over-cautious. I know the initial PSA was 136 and although Dad's already started on HT he's probably graded a Gleason 9 - so for me the quicker oncology get involved (even though he's on HT) the quicker it get's sorted.

It's kind of personal as my original PSA was 182 and Gleason 7 and original diagnosed Advanced Prostate Cancer and HT for life. When I finally got to oncology 11 months later - revised to just Prostate Cancer -but I joined the Gleason 9 club. I am on my last HT jab now and I have that feeling my journey may not be over.

So I tend to be over cautious when advising fellow "Gleason 9 Club" members,

You are of course quite right to point out the HT will be doing it's job and there's no need to panic.

Thanks for your continued support - it's very much appreciated.

    Kind Regards - Brian.

  • So helpful thanks! Wishing you the best of luck and thanks again for all the support.

  • Thanks David and Brian! This is really helpful. Yeah I think also knowing treatment options and a timeline will give us all a piece of mind. Thanks again for all your support. It’s been so helpful.

  • Hi CCG.

No probs my friend anytime you need any further help/support please please come back to me??

  • Brian ( ), thanks. I panicked slightly wondering if the new ‘hit it hard’ culture was from the start of initial HT and didn’t want to give out of date advice.  Hopefully escalation for oncology won’t be necessary in this case.

I hope I haven’t confused you.  Your dad’s treatment seems spot on so far and once you get to talk to the oncologist, a full plan will emerge and things will be much clearer. David

    Best wishes, David

  • Hi CCG

Re- 5 listed last . I honestly don’t know . I think it’s important to know that there is a 5 in there so you understand that you are dealing with something that needs attention quickly. Also because they are aware of it your dad will be getting the best treatment to keep it under control for that level.  HT and other treatments are so good at knocking the cancer back and keeping it in check, they really are quite amazing.

  • Hi Brian

Hope you don’t mind me jumping on this thread.  Curious as my husband is also in the Gleason 9 Club as to how long before chemo starts after HT therapy? Is there a preferable time to start? Our supposed plan is HT, chemo, radiotherapy.

Back in the waiting for the next stage.

Thanks for all the valuable advice.

  • Hello

I am one of the 20% members of "The Gleason 9 Club" who so far touch wood has managed to escape chemotherapy (but I am not out of the woods yet - see my post to David at the top of this page). You can read my full journey by clicking on my avatar.

Each case is different and it depends on your oncologist. They will start you off on the HT as this stops the cancer growth within a few days - then it's over to the Chemo to mop up any cancer that's "gone walkabout" in the body.

My honest advice is to ask your oncologist this question. i know you are waiting so that's another question for the list.

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Hi Davd,

Do you know I'm starting to feel like that, MrBW's initial treatment plan was nearly 2 years ago and it's starting to feel 'old news' good to know that things are always  moving though.

  • Just had a letter from Onology, the appointment is on October 21. This seems an insane wait time.
has anyone had anything similar? They said it’s an aggressive cancer but leave us 4 months with no treatment plan. This would be 5.5months from diagnosis.
