Treatment to strengthen bones

Hi

My husband's specialist nurse advised my husband to start alendronic acid with a dosage of 1 tablet per week

After reading the side effects leaflet,.I discovered that it can cause oesophagus issues and bad reflux.  As my husband was treated a couple of years ago for an eroded oesophagus and duodenal ulcers, I phoned and advised her of this.  She then said to speak to our GP who would be able to guide us as to the best solution.

Our GP normally Googles everything whilst you are in the room therefore I don't have much confidence that he will be able to provide the best answer.

The 1st appt is with the oncologist is on 2nd August.  Do you think it is worth leaving this question for them? Does anyone have any experience of such a thing?

Also, do you think it is worth asking for vits D and C?

All comments welcome

Many thanks in advance

Amanda

  • Hello Amanda (

That's an interesting question and one I think for the Oncologist and their team on 2 August - I think i would give the GP a miss!!Grimacing.

As for me i have been prescribed Calcium and Vitamin D tablets to prevent bone thinning.

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Thanks Brian. That's what I feel is best as you never know whether an alternative would be contraindicative to the HT.

  • Hello Amanda I am on calci-d 1000mg and alendronic acid 70mg with no problems both are taken for osteoporosis which is what everyone i know who takes it, takes it for, something you should ask your ONCOLOGIST, take care.

  • Hi AFLMF

Good evening it's great to meet you here today.

Yes I have recently been put on to these tablets recently by my consultant for osteoporosis.

These were given to help with my bones due to having the HT and also as the cancer has unfortunately escaped from my prostate and entered my bones.

I haven't experienced any problems to date with these tablets so far fingers crossed.

Please please come back to me if there's anything else that I can help you with???
