PSA count rising

I stopped prostap injections in September 22. since then i had been on Alendronic Acid for 4 years, I had a blood test in September 23 and my PSA had risen from 0.04 to 1.6, another test 3 weeks later showed a count of 4.5. then 6 weeks after this taken on instructions from McMillan, a count of 6.5, i spoke with my specialist and was told that the count will have to reach 10 before they put me back onto hormone injections, and will be on them every 3 months for life. My diet has diminished to a point that almost just a sandwich makes my full for the rest of day, i cannot even look at a meal without thinking, how i am going to eat that much.I have another blood test, regular 6 monthly check (not psa count ) should i ask for a psa count on this occasion, as i was told by my specialist that he wants a psa count in June, or wait until June. i am worried that the count may have risen above 10 before June appointment.

  • Hi  , are you able to give us some additional history re prostate?  Are you under an oncologist or a urologist?

I am sure, armed with a little background we can help.  David

  • Hi Manchi.

Good afternoon it's great to meet you today sorry that it's with the big C family.

As I can see you have had input from Macmillan with regards to your PSA is this correct???

I am currently being checked every 3mnts (PSA) and I am a fairly newbie to the whole experience June last year.

Is it worth contacting your specialist if you are concerned???

Can you please contact Macmillan again if you are able to: 0808 808 00 00

It might be worth asking for a PSA check when you have your regular bloods done if that will put your mind at rest.

Please please come back to us if that will help!!!!

  • Hi again Manchi.

I take it you are having Alendronic Acid for, or to prevent, osteoporosis. It is probably a silly question, and I am sorry if it is not relevant, but are you taking it as prescribed i.e. at least 30 minutes before breakfast preferably and remaining in an upright position for that time, as well as not taking it with anything else?

With regards to the PSA, it seems to be rising fairly rapidly. I read on a previous post that you have had radiotherapy? If this is the case then action is normally taken when the PSA rises 2 whole points above your nadir (lowest level). If you have not had radiotherapy then there are many reasons why the PSA can rise, however, in order to put your mind at rest there is no reason why you shouldn't add it to your blood test. Not only will it give you an earlier Idea if something is happening with the cancer but it will also check that your body is functioning as it should and help get to the bottom of why you have gone off your food, which could be for a variety of reasons.

  • Hi Manchi.

I just wanted to let you know that I have just been given Alendronic Acid Tablets once a week.

Half an hour before breakfast added to my Cancer Meds (Jan 2024)

These are to help with my bones as this is where my Cancer has escaped into unfortunately.

I am also taking Adcal-D3 (Lemon, Chewable Tablets) which are Calcium and Vitamin D.  "Two a day"

Both of these are to strengthen the bones in redness for the big C.

With all of my previous meds I will soon be "rattling"

But as long as they keep the"Big C" at bay I don't mind too be honest.

I hope that this is helpful my friend!!!!

  • i had radiotherapy for a whole month, that was 2 years ago, then i went on prostap injections for 2 years, now they have taken me off the prostap and i am on an injection one every year, zolondrate i think it is, its done by IV at the hospital. within 6 months my PSA has risen to 6.5 which i think is to quick, i do have osteoporosis in lumber and pelvic legions on the illiac bone, right side, i will ask for a PSA count when i go for my regular blood test. just to give me peace of mind on where the count is at, i am under urology and they are telling me to have my PSA done in June. which i think is to far away.

  • Can I suggest you also ask for a urine test just to rule out a water infection.

  • Hi Manchi, thanks for the update.  Guess somewhere along the line you will have been given a staging (looks like TNM).  I think most blood tests include a PSA but always worth getting the latest just to know what is happening,  You mentioned that you were 6.5 and an increase from 4.5 in 6 weeks sounds quite a big jump, but I presume your team know what they are doing.  Do you have details of a local Cancer Nurse Specialist you can have a chat with?  Might be worth talking for peace of mind or give the MacMillan nurse a ring.  Best wishes  David
