I know it’s very early days but thought I would post an update.
Early appointment yesterday, fab empathetic and informative nurse. Started with general Q/A where for the first time I was able to ask a million stupid questions (what is that occasional smell that isn’t urine and isn’t to do with me cleaning myself properly?).
Next, catheter removed painlessly although a bit of understandable soreness that subsided after a few hours. On with a pad and sat in waiting area with drinking water needing to provide samples in 2 hospital bottles. I got noticeably pretty wet during this time, probably mainly to me fitting the pad badly - would advise taking a few spare pants. I had no feeling that I ‘needed to go’ but went to loo anyway and surprisingly produced a stream - twice. After quick scan to check that bladder is empty (like pregnancy scan) I was signed off with an industrial size supply of pads, disposal bags, pump, information etc.
So, I’m definitely well behind Barnman in the recovery stakes but the good news is that I can pee which is another step in the right direction. I have no On or Off switch and cannot feel when I need to go. I know this is very early days so I’m hoping the continued pelvic floor exercises will help - I’ve been doing these for a while but maybe a bit ad hoc so need to obey my squeezy app every time and complete the exercise - wife shouts Nuts to Guts every few hours which still amuses her (from squeezy app). Was also doing these with catheter in which nurse said I shouldn’t have done.
Penis has almost disappeared after being skewered for 12 days - think pigeon - although nurse says this will improve with the Taladafil pills provided and the pump and just time to recover.
Night wasn’t too bad and it was great not to be restricted by my attachment and shower this morning was fab for same reason. I was awake at 5.30 this morning and for no reason went to loo and surprisingly produced a good stream. So something is holding pee back but just not telling me I need to go.
Also walked round the block this morning for the first time in ages that felt great.
So, that’s where I am. Will try to move about more, stick to PF schedule and hope I can gradually get control of the waterworks.
  • Hi Amnesiac Great to hear from you. Your positive attitude and sense of humour are a tonic in themselves.Keep up the PFE and by the sound of it you'll be well on top of things. I am doing exercises pre op in the hope that it's money in the bank . We will see. Great to hear you're out walking.  I think the exercise will help with bladder control.  Best wishes .

  • Thanks Sight. You have less than a week to wait now so just try and relax. I’m sure the PFE will stand you in good stead.  Wishing you the best of luck and if my waterworks improve I’ll have a Guinness for you on the day.

  • Thanks Amnesiac. A whole range of emotions and thoughts but just basically everything crossed that he gets it all. Enjoy that Guinness. Do update when the mood takes you.

  • Hello  - It's great to see a post where everything isn't doom and gloom - even when things are not shall we say "flowing to order".

I know it's not quite the same but having had a catheter for over 10 months learning how to pee again was "interesting". I did find that I regained control quickly but had to learn to "hold it" if you know the cut of my jib!!

Anyway - I am so pleased all is almost well and with a positive attitude and support from Mrs  all should come good in the end. Thanks for the update - keep us posted.

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Thanks Brian. Really appreciate your support. Very impressed by anyone like yourself who has catheter for so long and me whinging about 12 days compared to your 10 months really puts things in perspective. Mrs A threatening to withdraw assistance unless I keep up with the PF exercises is a great motivator. Still have night sweats every night, not sure why. I’m sure things are getting very slightly better every day. Enjoy your day in Turkey - we love Greece and can’t wait to be back - a distant target.
