My husband has advanced prostate cancer, spread to his spine. He's been on enzalutamide, had radiotherapy, now having chemo. My query is about the pain in his neck and the back of his head, which we presume is from the mets and osteoporosis. He has low dose morphine patches but otherwise the only pain relief is ibuprofen. This pain is present most days, sometimes worse than others. We've mentioned it to his consultant but got no help other than to take OTC pain relief. I don't know what to suggest, we're using Voltarol/Flexiseq creams but I just wondered if anyone knows of anything that might help?
Hello SpiritintheSky A warm welcome to the online Prostate Community. I am so sorry to read of your husband's problems. I have not received chemotherapy myself but would make the following suggestions:
* Do you have a named CNS on your husband's team - if you mention it to them they may well have more time than the Consultant to look into the cause of the pain and offer some pain relief.
* Have a word with your GP - they may well be able to work with the hospital in resolving the issue.
* If you consider you are not receiving the service and help you need contact the hospital PALS service - Patient Advisory and Liaison Service - and they should be able to resolve the issue.
I assume that the over the counter medication is not hitting the spot as he has already been prescribed low dose morphine patches.
I hope this is of some help - keep us posted.
Kind Regards - Brian.

Hello again SITS.
My husband found that his bone and muscle pain increased whilst he was on chemotherapy, but reduced when it was finished. He does get relief from regular osteopath visits. Another thing you could ask for is a referral to a pain management clinic which ensures that pain medication is in balance and how to use it most effectively. They also teach relaxation techniques and how to balance activity with rest.
Hi Spiritinthesky,
It could be worth asking for a low dose of steroids, My partner has 5mg of Prednisone alongside Abiraterone (similar to Enzalutamide.) Prednisone and other corticosteroids are used frequently in the treatment of advanced prostate cancer and can be used to treat pain from bone metastases. Certainly since OH started taking it with HT his hip and back pain has been significantly reduced.
