Catheter trouble

I posted here a few weeks ago, but  I can't find the post. I had some lovely replies off some really kind members.

My dad has been diagnosed with T3N1M0 and is currently waiting to start radiotherapy.

He started Hormone injections two weeks ago and will hopefully be having radiotherapy in April/May

The reason for my post. His problems started back in July 2023 when he went to A&E with urine retention.  They fitted a Catheter and he started on tamsulosin. He has the catheter out in September and has had no issues since.

Yesterday morning he couldn't pass urine, this went on all day and night so he was back in A&E this morning having a catheter put in.

Has anyone had this issue after being on the tamsulosin for some time? Could it be something to do with starting the hormones? Just after any advice really? Thanks :)

  • Hi Lisa.

I have found your last post and moved it to the top.

Sorry I can't help with the urine retention. Has he been checked for a urine infection? Prostatitis can also cause a stricture, as can a build up of scar tissue following previous catheter insertion.

Having hormone therapy should help to shrink the prostate which normally eases urination problems.

  • Thank you so much for your help. I'm new to this site and on my phone so couldn't find it.

He doesn't have an infection as bloods and other obs were normal. Could be scar tissue I hadn't thought of that. Thank you :)

  • Hi Lisa16, I had a bladder neck contracture early in my treatment  caused by scar tissue which although it made urinating difficult and painful, sorted itself out quite quickly. Lisa the scar tissue is usually easy to see. take care,

  • Hi Eddie, thank you for your reply. I'll pass this onto my dad.

Hope you're doing ok and treatment is going well for you

  • No thanks necessary. but appreciated, I am on HT only, was hoping for other options but recent changes have ruled that out,  though i am doing ok, take care.
