Dad's started treatment... incredible itching. Advisedbhe can't take antihistamines? Why? What do others take ConfusedTired face

  • Hi

If you read my profile I had just the same issues.

Two creams sorted me out : AproDerm emollient (prescribed by the GP and I still use it!)  and Child's Farm baby moisturiser - it's so good I still buy this too (you can get it from an online store named after a South American River!)

It was so annoying at one time I had to sleep with my hands under my pillow to stop me scratching and I even took my moisturiser out with me on my Wednesday evenings in the pub!

I still use them both although the itching has gone  - but my skin feel great (ask Mrs Millibob!).

I hope this helps - Brian.

  • Hi.

Unfortunately the itching is a side effect of the hormone therapy but, from what I have read, some are worse than others so make sure your dads team know about it. There are many reasons why antihistamines may not be advised such as hypertension, urine retention, heart drugs to name a few.

If your dad wants immediate relief then put cold flannels on the worst areas - keep a stock in the fridge. Generally try and avoid anything which might irritate the skin such as perfumed soaps and shampoo- try baby products or olive soap. Same for washing clothes. Also a personal hand held fan could cool the area down. I think the baby products Brian uses are also available at a well known high street health product retailer.

  • Hi

I’ve had horrible itching for around 4 months now , it’s really strange it seems to move around my body . At first it was my legs , now it’s chest , arms and neck . I’ve got a couple of creams E45 and Betnovate  which helps ,

    all the best

  • Funnily enough, the first river that sprang to mind was Orinoco Wink  Such a wonderful word to say out loud.

  • The issue is with being a "Community Champion" I cant say or advertise it. so your delivery from "Orinoco Prime" will be with you tomorrow!

It's all part of life - funny enough - you and me are doing well and you know what - it's great still seeing you on the forum - so thank you from me for you still hanging  around  - it's great to have your input. I think your journey on your profile will also be inspiring others so stick with us and keep posting - we value you as a  Community member.

    Kind Regards - Brian Thumbsup

  • I was very reticent about joining in the conversations on the forum & originally just read the posts to glean information.  What quickly became apparent was that in some way, everyone was involved in their own journey of prostate cancer, whether as a family member or actually having the illness.  What struck me was how friendly posters were, offering help & support to any question raised, & the community now feels very much like an extended family who know how challenging things can be and are there if needed with advice & suggestions.

Like many people I tended to think that the medical profession know all the answers, but it's now clear that where you live & what facilities are available at your local hospital can determine what treatments are available & offered to you.  The knowledge of everyone posting means that different treatment options may be worth exploring albeit it at another hospital, so it's a huge thank you from me to everyone on here & especially the community champions who try to keep us all in some sort of order.

Keeping up to date with all the posts is expanding my knowledge of new treatments so I will continue to check in daily, & if my experiences can help someone then that's a bonus.

    All the best

    Another Brian

  • Hello Brian

Thank you very much for your help and support and a cracking post too. Yes the one thing about cancer is we all have our own journey but all hope to reach the same destination. It's the cancer that brings us together and acts as a type of "bond" and it's only us and the family around us that can fully understand the journey.

As I quite often say "we are a great bunch" on here and the entire Prostate cancer Community is like one big family.and from a personal point of view I enjoy working (well it's not work but you get the drift) with you all.

    Kind Regards - Brian Thumbsup.
