Treatment time scales so different with various NHS Trusts!

Having just read through Buzzers profile I am amazed how my local Trust differs from his and wonder if I should be pushing them more. Rather than reproduce the timeline of my experience / treatment here I have added it to my profile which can be viewed by clicking on my Avatar beside this entry.

I would appreciate the thoughts of those who have passed through the PC treatment system in different parts of the country. In my profile you will see where I am located and I would like to hear from anyone else who is being treated in the same Trust at this time or recently.

Many thanks in advance and Happy New Year to you all.

  • Thanks Shar, we are with Nationwide with their Flex Plus Account. That was renewed in August 2023 when they were informed of my diagnosis being positive and radiotherapy was necessary but not yet started. The declaration of those facts did not attract any medical upgrade cost, simply stating that there would be no cover for the pre-existing condition.

Our travel destination at that time was France, Germany etc. in a motor caravan and would be at least four weeks. The cover was for the full twelve months from start of policy but a maximum trip length of 31 days.

  • Hello rod, when my husband received his diagnosis he went into a state of 'shut-down shock'. I had to literally do the research, the phone calls, the questioning etc etc. He just stopped. This illness, as I have repeatedly said, is a 'couples illness'. I'm pleased your wife is giving you all the support you need. I feel so sorry for those people who have no one being proactive and supportive.

I looked on it very much as 'pay back time' for my husband. He has supported me through thick and thin and we reached a point where he needed some pay back :) He's doing very well, I think. He completed his RT in March 2023 and is due just one more 3 monthly decapeptyl injection (we hope) in February. This means that, from May, hopefully, we might have emerged a bit more from the dark cloud of PC. He will obviously be closely monitored as far as PSA goes and we have no guaranteed but we have followed medical guidance to the letter.

Best of luck with your own journey and do let us know how you get on!

  • Welcome Oscar203, Doncaster Royal Infirmary. my cancer journey was pretty typical bicalutamide, then HT followed by RT, Confirmed diagnosis May 20th, first consultation June 9th, had biopsies and scans by July 12th to show stage and type, which warranted  another scan and biopsy which were done by July 22nd.. RT was supposed to start early Feb but needed a TURP which would have to wait until my prostate had shrunk, which was Feb 1st, would have been earlier but for strike action backlog, so put RT back at Weston Park Hospital Sheffield 7 weeks, eventually starting April 3rd. Generally most of my experiences have ben ok, but, I turned up for a CT scan which had not been booked in properly, had an appointment for flow and retention testing, but was told it was for a meeting so was unprepared, "this was when my bladder issues were at their worst" and i was also sent home half way through bladder tests because the nurse never read my notes. All DRI, and a6 week delay, as of now, with oncology appointment at Weston, Good things i have an open door policy at urology and can see my CNS whenever i need to, and quick access to my consultants, and i also have a district nurse and several other specialist nurses. So as the NHS is understaffed and underfunded i would say i am happy with my treatment. PS Osca i do have other health issues which, at times hampered my cancer treatment, We all know the NHS is not perfect and i think the Trust system started in1990 is the biggest reason for it. take care, Eddie

  • Thanks for responding to my early comments Eddiel. I have read through your Profile, you do seem to have been through a very rough time but your words will encourage many. Hopefully the medics are winning the battle against your various issues, good luck with it all.

May 2024 be kind to you.

  • Thank you Osca, We are doing what we can and enjoying life in the meantime. happy new year to you and your loved ones, take care, Eddie
