HT drug questions.

HI all,

I'm just a few days from the end of my 28 HT tablets (Bicalutamide 50mg) and had my first injection (Decapeptyl SR 3.75mg) two weeks in and looking at the sheet I was given (and a copy for the Dr) it looks like my next injection, 30 days after the first could be 'Prostrap 11.25mg' OR 'Decapeptyl SR 11.25' and my Dr Surgery has put Prostrap on my medications list.

Two questions please.

Why would the Drs allocate the Prostrap over Decapeptyl, other that was on the top of the 'OR' list and

it says on the form that this second injection should be administered '3 monthly' but has previously stated 1 monthly?

So does it go, 14 days tablets, injection, 14 days tablets, stop tablets, 14 days later 2nd injection, then ... injections every 3 months till ... ?

Also, there is no mention of when I start RT and / or what other tests I might have / need along the way? Is there a set time or is it based on say my PSA etc please?

p.s. I went to the second PC monthly meeting and it was good to see all the guys, plus a few extras again. One chap commented that I seemed much happier this time. ;-)

  • i had 28 days bicalutamide  then a months  injection of prostrap after that i went onto 3 monthly injections after that .

i think u only get a month first injection to see how u tolerate it

in january i will have been on it 5yrs between that and abiraterone i'm doing o

  • I had Prostap3 for three years and every injection was in the glutes. Alternate sides each time.

Yeah, the nurse who administered my first jab mentioned I should remember which cheek it was in as they alternate.

The only irritation was that after each injection the PREVIOUS injection site would be sore for a couple of days.

    Oooerr!

  • i think u only get a month first injection to see how u tolerate it

Then that's strange that they don't look to be giving me the same one when they get going doesn't it?

  • 2 years on since my month of Radiation treatment, there are still rocks but no hard places (if you know what I mean).  There's a feeling down there but nothing to back it up.

But... I am now in remission so at least it all was worth it in the long run.

Best wishes for your future treatment.

  • HI Steve,

Would you say your situation is 'typical' for your treatment path?

  • Able, I was T2, Gleason 3+4 Intermediate risk.

It was caught early, I ended up only having 2 six monthly Decapeptyl injections, told I was in remission a couple of months before my 3rd injection.

The month of Radiation treatment went ok but the fatigue really hit me after the first 2 weeks.

Counselling really helped me as well as being in this forum and attending a monthly Prostate Cancer Support Group at my local Maggie's in Newcastle.  All that helped me to stop bottling everything up inside.

Well over a year for the hormones to come out of my system.  Still got ED, but life is starting again down there.

So back to your question I have no idea if my situation is typical.

    I think I am similar?  Gleason 8 (High risk), T2N0M0, T3a?

So it seems it was quite a while between starting the HT and starting the RT? I thought it would be more like a month or two?

    The fatigue is noted.

Good to hear you are on the up so so speak. ;-)

    Thanks for your reply.

  • Hello

RT used to be 2-3 months after starting HT but the NHS looks like the waiting lists are on the up and it's common to wait for over 6 months now. It might be a good idea to contact your oncology team to check on how long the waiting list is in your locality.

    best wishes - Brian.

  • Hi able and welcome, my treatment, similar to anubis 28 days on bicalutamide. 3 x 1 monthly prostap "in the stomach", followed by 3 monthly for life. To start off on 3 monthly prostap  injections can cause problems. I think decapeptyl and prostap are very similar so i would not be concerned which one i took. As millibob says 6 months+  for RT is the new normal. Regarding tests the standard ones are CT +  MRI scan plus a prostate biopsy your PSA usually has to fall below 1 "not always"  before RT can begin. If i could give you one piece of advice before you start RT  get yourself as fit as you can, take care.

How does that impact the outcome OOI Brian?

For got to add, I have a telephone consultation with Oncology in a couple of days so I can ask then.
