Hi

Just a wee update. Husband was diagnosed end of May with PC, Gleason 3 +4 = 7, T3 N1 M0, bone scan normal but CT scan showed hot spot in pelvic lymph node. Started immediately on Bicalutamide for three weeks then 3 monthly Prostap for 2 years. PSA was 252 so the Consultant felt as it was so high also to start Abiraterone and Prednisolone, also for two years, he said it was a ‘belt and braces’ approach with a view to being cureable. Just received all his planning appointments and radiotherapy schedule.  He has to get gold seed implants in prostate 19th October, following week he will get a CT scan and planning appointment and then starting on 20th November start radiotherapy with last appointment being on 18th December. He has to have bloods checked every two weeks for three months on Abiraterone then monthly. Our heads are spinning with the amount of appointments he has.  Was just wondering if anyone had experience with the gold seed markers as to whether it’s a similar procedure to the biopsy? And, I know this sounds daft, but do you think he will feel well enough to eat Christmas dinner or will the radiotherapy make him unwell.  I would appreciate hearing from anyone who has had similar treatment. Oh and his PSA has dropped from 252 to 24 Slight smile

thank you

Linda

P.S. congratulations Brian x

  • Hi Lin

Yes, suppose the gold seed markers insertion is similar to biopsy , good thing is not so many, think 3 or 4.

    So Def more tolerable.

Yes RT is relatively easy so should be ok and treatment does finish 1 week before I see..

Any RT side effects should be waning by then

    Best wishes

    Steve

  • Thank you Steve, yes you’re right, they said 3 gold seeds, he will be pleased it’s not a worse procedure than the biopsy, which he found uncomfortable but at least knows what to expect now if it’s similar.

Thanks for all your help and hope you are well.

  • I can confirm what Steve said that it's three gold seeds. They help the radiologists to get him in the correct position on the treatment table. The process is very quick and only slightly uncomfortable. He will probably be a bit sore for a day or two and will likely have blood in his urine for a short time. When I had it done in January 2019 I had two weeks wait before the planning scan.

Remind him to ask for a copy of the ultrasound photos.

Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery and today is a gift.

  • Hi Linda

Wow - progress and a full timeline too.

I can only comment on the RT. Two simple things.

    * Exercise as much as you can - fatigue will be around the corner.

    * Follow the Radiologists instructions to the letter regarding diet etc. You don't want anything that will give you wind, Beans, pulses, green leaf vegetables, fizzy drinks, caffeine and alcohol.

I am sure he will enjoy his Christmas lunch and also a half of shandy with it,

    Best wishes as ever.

  • Hi Linda

Your husbands RT is happening around the same time as mine was in 2019, for me,  however, it ran over the Christmas period. In terms of tiredness and fatigue, Christmas lunch was fine. BUT I stretched the dietary advice, most of which has already been given in other posts,  I was given by the hospital, and Boxing Day was the worst day of my RT journey.

It may well be the case, that as your husband has finished his RT a week prior, he will be fine, but I would take things easy and not shock the system. Couple of glasses of wine and a few sprouts were the things that did for me!

    Regards

  • That's a new one on me having sprouts alongside wine - sounds like an idea from Heston Blumenthal. Wink
