A while ago someone messaged about travel insurance for Prostate Cancer but unfortunately I can’t remember the details. Does anyone else remember or know of an insurance company who would cover my husband? He has finished his chemo and radiotherapy treatment and is on hormone therapy every 3 months. His PSA is 0.2 at the moment and he is having PSA tests every three months.

Many thanks Journey One

  • Hi Journey One

There's a Travel Insurance thread on MacMillan's that's very good. Me and Mrs Millibob have an annual worldwide policy with All Clear (she has some issues - Medical!!) but the joint price was good.

    1. Have a look at world first, insure and go, and insure with and all clear. I did dummy bookings with all 4 and it looked as if they will insure.
  • Many thanks Brian. That’s really helpful.

  • Many thanks Shar. That’s really useful.

  • Hi

Insurancewith were the only ones I tried, who asked in-depth questions about my health.

    Trying to get fit again!
  • When my husband was diagnosed our bank insurance refused to cover him for anything, not just the PC. I got a single trip policy for the 2 of us with Insure4Medical for less than £300 to cover all our various conditions.

One of he questions was had treatment 'with the exception of hormone therapy started'. At that point we knew that treatment was needed, but we didn't know for sure what it would be. I ticked the box 'no. Treatment needed, but not yet started'. As my husband has now had the surgery I will need to ring them when we have the results of his follow up appointment to ensure that he is still covered.

I have also done several dummy screenings online and invariably they won't cover without a phone call, if treatment has started or completed. This includes the company we're already insured with.

I understand that this is because there is more chance of a claim post treatment, because of the side effects eg risk of urinary retention' needing emergency treatment.

  • Many thanks for your helpful advice.

  • I understand all the insurers use the same algorithm and as soon as you mention "Big C" you end up having to ring them to speak with a human - it's easier just to ring them!!

    Kind Regards

    Brian.

  • I’m not sure which bank you are insured with but we had exactly the same problem! As soon as radiotherapy was completed they put him back on cover but the oncologist recommended holding off travel for 6-8 weeks post radiotherapy as apparently side effects can still occur. Ever cautious, we followed that advice!

  • I may give them a try if we book another holiday and I can't get cover anywhere else.. As the insurance was part of a package that we paid a monthly fee for we decided to turn off the insurance and save the money. Before we opened the account I rang them to ask if we would be covered for the conditions we already had and they said they couldn't tell me before the account was opened. No doubt I'll need to switch the insurance back on and start paying the fee again before they will reconsider then if they refuse they'll get another 2 months fee from us for nothing.

I think because my husband had surgery  which involves cutting and rejoining the urethra to the bladder the risk of scare tissue causing a blockage is why it's more difficult to get insurance.
