Buyer's Remorse

Well there has been some general delay, perhaps some of it is my fault dithering, I am not too sure but it does not seem to be the time or place to be apportioning blame. My Radiotherapy starts on April 20th and I am most apprehensive. I am a dreadful coward and fear the knife but maybe surgery would have been cleaner and more definitive. They decided not to do the nodes. Onwards we go but after a discussion with the radiotherapist I feel that I am buying time, not a cure.

I would make one point in the hope of helping others. I have been slow in selecting my treatment and have even been considering alternative treatments. I have been doing this under the misconception that with prostate cancer treatment as it is slow growing, a leisurely approach is fine.

A recent article that I read has blown this idea out of the water. As I am Gleason 8 I probably should have been moving faster as being 8 the cancer is not only high grade but likely to be spreading fast.

  • Hello RENs, please don’t fear the radiotherapy! I was scared silly about my husband having to undergo it. The side effects sounded horrendous! When it came to it the hardest factor for us was the daily grind of the journey across country roads and city centre to the hospital. My husband moaned bitterly about the daily enemas! They, obviously, did not bother me!! As I’m sure others will tell you - follow the instructions to the letter - they seem annoying but they are designed to keep you safe and well.

like you, we have looked on the treatment with mixed feelings. We know it was given with ‘ the intention to cure’ and that is what we are hoping for. But…we know there are no guarantees but, if there is no cure, we at least hope to have bought time. And …oh…we do intend to get the most out of that time!!!

    all the best!

  • Rens, hope the Radiotherapy goes well for you.  Nothing to worry about.  After the first one it will put your mind at ease.

All of the information you get from the hospital can be quite worrying, with all of the possible side effects.  Not everyone has side effects.

As Worriedwife said, the journey to the hospital can be the worst thing.

The enimas are nothing to fear.  They do the job.

Keep us updated on your progress.

  • Hi Rens

Again I am 100% in agreement with Worriedwife and Steve - Radiotherapy is given with the intention to cure and for something that's pain free and the only issue is travelling to and from the hospital - I would embrace it with both hands.

I completed mine 8 weeks ago and am a Gleason 9 - the intention was curative, so far I have had very little in the way of side effects apart from the fatigue - I have two dogs and most days I walked this off. Yes me and the little boys room are best of friends and I can write a book on "motorway service station toilets" but again it's a small price to pay for hopefully curative treatment.

If you are still apprehensive about the RT and worried about it please feel free to drop me a personal message and we can have a chat about my experience and what you can expect together with details about eating and drinking during the treatment.

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Good for you as you said to me previously stay positive. This forum is an incredible space full of incredible people sharing their stories. I feel a tear coming but that's probably the bloody hormones.

  • My husband commences radiotherapy on the 20 April to his prostate and I have tried looking for a diet sheet but to no avail. If someone has one could you pm me or let me know where you got it from? I asked at the hospital yesterday and all they said was he can’t have beans, pulses and not to drink alcohol. Many thanks Lynne

  • This is the link for the diet sheet the radiology department gave my husband when he was having radiotherapy and complaining of bloating and wind. Obviously, I don’t know your husbands medical details so would not know whether or not this is what he needs. Scroll down the page slightly and you will see a pretty diagram with foods that are ok and foods that could cause problems

  • Journey one, your husband will be fine with the Radiotherapy.  I see Worriedwife sent you a link for a diet sheet.

I went through the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle, they told me that they don't have diet sheets, just to cut out alcohol and caffeine until the Radiotherapy was completed.  I followed this and was ok.  I kept asking for a diet sheet but no luck.

Best of luck with the treatment, keep us posted.
