Hi all, just wondering what to expect as i am about embark on monthly hormone injections. How has anyone else found how they was effected or experiences.

Im 68yr old, reasonably fit and active, still work 2 days week

I was diagnosed with localy advanced prostrate cancer almost 10 months ago, gleeson 4 + 4. Psa 14.5

Unfortunatly i am unable to have radio therapy or surgery due to my previous medical history

Was put immeadiatly onto daily bicalutamide hormone tablets, experienced little side effects, and they did improve my health dramaticaly compared to how ill i was feeling the previous 6 months prior to diagnosis.

After 4 months psa reduced to just over 2., then the next 4monthly consultation ( 2 weeks ago) psa had risen to 5.5. So looks like bicalutamide stop doing it job, consultant advised to go onto monthly injections.im  feeling slightly anxious about this.

Any info much appreciated

  • Rob321,

I had the 6 monthly Hormone injections (luckily for only one year).  I had Hot Flushes, big mood swings, could cry at the drop of a hat for no reason, my waistline grew and grew and grew, ED, libido went to zero.  PSA levels went down to 0.09

But apart from that, I don't regret having the Hormones, they did the job for me.  I am now nearly 13 months into Remission.

I sometimes miss the Hot Flushes in this cold weather, but you can't have everything.

    Best of luck.

  • Rob321, No need to feel anxious.  I know that's easier said than done.  I know I was, "fear of the unknown", that got me every time.

Some men don't get any side effects from the Hormone injections, we all are different.

  • Hi Rob - I have been on 6 monthly injections for 15 months - I have had 3 so far. Side effects - weight gain, hot flushes (under control) ED - no issues - we already have 4 kidsSunglasses and I can cry at the drop of a hat - but it works - my PSA is nice and low 1.37. I hope this helps.

  • Hi Rob,

I am 74yr old, reasonably fit and active, and was diagnosed with local cancer about 5 years ago and had brachytherapy. treatment unfortunately I did not receive follow on check ups and 10 months ago had a blood test and scans and found it hd spread to local lymph nodes. I was immediately put on hormone treatment of bicalutamide and then 3 monthly injections of decapeptyl together with daily tablets of Enzalutamide my PSA was 61 now down to 0.03.

Apart from some side effects such as feeling a bit lethargic maybe more aches and pains, increased boobs I feel ok, but it probably affects people in different ways.

    Good luck with the treatment.

  • Hi

The three monthly injections, which I’ve had for six and a half years, Will make you a couple of things, fatigue always there and tiredness, these are the main two, we’re all different so other side effects may pass you by.

    Stay safe

    Joe

  • Hi Joe

I appreciate the feedback, I can accept the side effects as the treatment seems to be working. As you say we're all different and react in different ways.

    Good luck to you

    Peter
