My RT sessions are coming up soon...A simulation appointment was about 10 days ago. During the session it was apparent that my bowels and/or gas retained was a problem. A full urinary bladder was present * which is good.
For the 9 am apt. I fasted from 6 pm the night before (so...about 15 hours total) + Gas X/simethicone treatment both at night and the morning + 30 ounces of H2O 1 hour prior + and even an enema (over the counter) treatment while at the office. All this but still some issues. It is imperative that I present myself in the best way possible for the RT work to be given the best chance. My diet is a healthy balance of high fiber, lots of greens/salads/vegies, and low fat (I really do miss cheese! What I would do for a good pork chop or steak!). The odd thing is - diet wise - is the diet suggested DURING treatment is suggestive of just the opposite. The purpose given: a primary objective is to maintain weight. Which does make sense. Question: has anybody else experienced this issue? Am I overthinking this? I know everybody is different and all.... The good news? On this side of the pond in California we have received over 200% of our normal rainfall/snowfall to date. Should be a GREAT season for backpacking on the Pacific Crest Trail! Chris
Hello Chris. It all sounds very different to our experience over here in the Uk! My husband finished his radiotherapy last week. No fasting! Micro enemas supplied by the hospital and to be self administered about 2 hours before the RT. 30 minutes before to empty bladder and immediately drink 600 mls of water. Like you, we eat a lot of fruit and veg and fibre and told to cut down on these. Gas ( wind) was a problem but they advised a lactose and gluten free diet and that helped a lot. Some fruits and veg were allowed with this diet. He was also advised to avoid caffeine and fizzy drinks.
as for your weather - I was watching it on tv the other night! Sounds like your northern areas have had lots of snow and the worry is where all the water will go when it melts!
Hi Chris. I finished my RT 5 weeks ago. I was advised to leave beans and pulses alone along with green leaf veg. Avoid alcohol and ensure you have plenty of exercise. I sailed through my 20 fractions without any issues. I did drink coffee but don't drink fizzy drinks. I hope this helps. Good luck with your RT.
Brian.

Thank you for the reply! The differences in approach seems to be close. The fast is only overnight with a morning appointment. The "empty bladder - then drink water" is similar. As you said the turnaround suggestion is reduce fruit, veg, and fiber (Say Whaaaaaat???!!! - You mean to return to my junk food ways?). Where would I find info on the "lactose and gluten free diet? Maybe somewhere else om the MacMillan website? Again...Thank you for your collaboration. Chris
Thank you for this insight. You're right about the beans: guess there goes the favorite Mexican dishes! Question: you mentioned "beans and pulses"...What are pulses? As for alcohol: my only drinking problem is: I don't drink more often! Again...Thank you for your insight and encouragement.
Just done some googling and the diet sheet they gave my husband is on this link https://www.gastroconsa.com/patient-education/irritable-bowel-syndrome/low-fodmap-diet/
if you scroll down it’s a diet sheet with foods to avoid on the left side and foods to enjoy on the Right hand side.
hth
ps - it’s got plenty of fruit and veg you can enjoy!
That is so cool! I like the format: concise - to the point! Thank you!
Hi Chris - Pulses is the posh English word for Beans, Lentils, Peas, Chick Peas and Broad Beans. looks like you will have to live off junk food for a while!!!
