Hi, i am 57 and due to start my 35 sessions of RT forT3 G8 .

ive heard the sessions/ treatment can make you tired and increase trips to the loo.

i’ll be glad to start after the wait.

wonder how i’ll feel during/ after and how long it takes to get back to some sort of normal?? Physically i ferl ok, regular trips to wee etc but mentally its a bit tough.

  • WW,

You are, all of your comments are straight from the heart!

  • Two things I would recommend:

Pelvic floor exercises - as you go through the radiotherapy, it gets more difficult to hold on when you need a pee, and this is particularly relevant as most men need to hold a full bladder during the radiotherapy treatment. If I hadn't done pelvic floor exercises, I doubt I would have remained continent towards the end with the full bladder.

General exercise - this is really important to counteract many of the side effects, particularly fatigue. It also improves the effectiveness of the radiotherapy - cells respond better to it the more profused with blood and oxygenated they are. Walking is fine - try to do some every day. It's infinitely variable in duration and intensity, so you can adjust the level as you get fitter (which happens very quickly). However, you won't be able to get fitter after about half way through the radiotherapy because of the toll it takes, but building up beforehand can help maintain fitness through and afterwards.

  • I quite agree with Andy. Our prostate cancer nurses advised us to get as fit as possible as soon as my husband was diagnosed. We have been attempting daily walks - even if only short ones!  Our normal route incorporates an uphill haul all the way home. Initially the haul was a struggle but I think they’ve lowered ( mostly) the gradient as we now get up it without stopping for breath!

  • Hi Andy

    Couldn't agree more.
