Hi, i am 57 and due to start my 35 sessions of RT forT3 G8 .

ive heard the sessions/ treatment can make you tired and increase trips to the loo.

i’ll be glad to start after the wait.

wonder how i’ll feel during/ after and how long it takes to get back to some sort of normal?? Physically i ferl ok, regular trips to wee etc but mentally its a bit tough.

  • Hi Richmond

I didn't do anything whilst on RT, as I was too tired - the RT + HT made me very tired. So, the first I thought about walking - which is my head clearing exercise method - was 3 months later. The problem is that the HT ( I was on it for over 2 years) really sapped my stamina and strength. So, whilst I used to walk 7 miles plus with no problem, I started off only managing half a mile or so. I built this up, over a few months, until I was walking 3 miles ish. My next plan was to climb a hill on the walk in one go. This was really difficult and probably took 6 months - the lack of stamina caused by the HT  is hard.

I am now 13 months post HT and I'm not back to full fitness - and actually I'm not sure I ever will be.

    Hope this answers your question.

    Regards

    Stuart

  • Hi Stuart, have a look at the NHS Strength and Flexibility podcasts. There's five levels and they start with a few easy routines going up to a fairly energetic workout. You do them at home so you can spend as long as you like at each level.

Have a look here where there's a link to some videos too.

  • Hi Seamus

Many thanks for the link - I will check it out.

I have also found out that my local sports centres offer lessons specifically for people getting over cancer treatment. They give 8 free taster lessons and then I can decide whether they are of any use. If I decide they are then I will need to join. Guess we will see!

    Thanks again for the link.

  • Hi Richmond, I think it was about 2 months after my Radiation sessions I was getting over the fatigue.  I was luck with incontinence, just dribbles (if you know what I mean).  I got these "pads" through a district nurse, they were massive, you could stitch 6 together and make a quilt!  They did the job though.  Mostly I was wearing them "just in case"!!  A couple down in the bed every night.

My fatigue came back about 7 months after my last Radiation session.  Still struggling with it now.

But, everything must have worked as I am now in Remission (nearly 13 months).  It was definitely all worth it really.

  • Stuart, I am still in the same boat as you.  We are going away for a week's walking holiday next week, staying in Clumber Park in Nottinghamshire.  Love it there, hundreds of squirrels everywhere (gray ones, we don't discriminate on colour).

If I was retired I could walk more, but...

  • WW, You know how you said you had a lot of help from this forum?  You are doing exactly that now!

    It feels good doesn't it?

  • Hi Steve

It's a b****r. Seems to be one step forward to normality and 2 steps back. Just when I think I'm getting close to normal fitness it disappears and I struggling to get up those hills again!

Enjoy your break - we are off to Exmouth in the 20th so there should be plenty of walking opportunities ( hills of course!).

    Regards

  • I am not sure that I’m providing much help in the grand scheme of things but my heart really goes out to all you men battling this disease and all wives and partners going through such unbearable anguish.

  • ...One of these days!!!

  • I have found the podcasts on UkRadio but I can't see a way to download them. Here's the link:

    https://www.radio-uk.co.uk/podcasts/nhs-strength-and-flexibility

I'll keep looking for ones that can be downloaded.

Edited to add that I have now found the downloadable ones so that you can take them with you on your phone:
