Docetaxel - Experience’s

Hi all, I don’t post here often but hope to start a discussion on Docetaxel, I am sure there have been other discussion though.  You can see from my profile that I am stage 4 and in my case Abiraterone has failed quite quickly (3 to 4 months).  PSA now 31.6 from a low of 4 I think.  So it never really had the impact on my that others might have seen.  I am now considered to be Castration resistant PC. In discussion with Oncoligist she has said the best option now it to try and halt the progression of cancer (quite widespread in bones) with 10 sessions of Docetaxel.  I am interested in other peoples experiences of this chemotherapy and happy to record my journey with it here of it might be helpful to others in the future.  I start at the on the 6th of Feb with bloods on the 2nd and pre Chemotherapy and call with Oncologist on the 3rd of Feb.

Any experience you have had are welcome here.  Hope you are all well.

Cheers

  • Hi Young man, that is brilliant to read and it looks like it’s done its job for you.  I do hope I can get some lower numbers and symptom relief too.  Hopeful that i can given the positive stories here.

    Thanks Again

  • Chemo 4 infusion done yesterday and all according to plan.  Had all the pre meds and then the infusion itself.  Got my weight done and I was a bit unhappy with how much I had put on.  They were saying people tend now to put on weight with chemo due to the amount to steroids used.  Not sure everyone else’s experience.  Biggest fish to fry right enough than weight gain I think.  So far I had a good sleep last night and apart from the usual flare in spinal pain and nausea and I don’t fell too bad today.  Fingers crosses that carries on.

As usual thanks in advance for reading and or any feedback .

  • Hello - I hope your husband is feeling better now.  My husband is to begin the first of eight cycles of Docetaxel on the 24th.  I have asked the Unit about Cryotherapy but they didn't know anything about it.  I wonder whether your husband used cooling gloves and socks and, if so, which brand? We wish you both well.  (Preparing for the worst and hoping for the best!)Thumbsup

  • Hi Sned

Thats some attacking force eight cycles, if he’s worried about hot flushes, he could ask his doctor for provera this will help, I took them for my hot flushes.
I know they’ve told you what to expect, we’re all different, let’s hope he misses some of the side effects, I tell everyone this who’s starting chemo, take his temperature morning and last thing at night, they once in the what to expect, but being safe is a priority with chemotherapy.
He might feel good for a day or two then it hits you, hopefully he will bypass this but fatigue will happen.

All of us will wish him well, may he live many many years.

    Stay safe

    Joe

  • Hi everyone. A small update.  Side effects have been as consistent as before, fatigue etc etc. More importantly or worryingly, I guess, I got a call from oncologist yesterday, unscheduled.  She had been looking at bone scan I got on Tuesdays and was calling to say that she was very worried I was at risk of pathological fractures of the thighs bones.  She knows that I have still been trying to run and wanted to tell me, ask me lol, not to run over the weekend.  Of course I agreed but I am gutted as running and exercise is my big way of trying to cope with all of this.  We also had a discussion about why this is happening and again sadly the cancer is progressing quickly in the bones.  My PSA is now up to 1080 and chemo shows no signs of having any impact on things.  I meet with her next week and we can then take it from there.  Meanwhile I am now wrapped in bubble wrap by the better half.  I am allowed to take short low impact walks, so I will do that.  Sorry it’s not great news and I know chemo is usually much more effective than this so don’t take my experience as standard please.

    Cheers

    Michael

  • Good luck Sned, I hope he gets on well with his chemo.

    Cheers

  • Thanks for your replies (I slipped up with the number of cycles for Sned - should have read '6').  So sorry to hear about your scan - we wish you both all the best!

  • Thank you.  Fingers crossed for him…It’s a straight forward process, nothing really to worry about in terms of the process of getting the chemo.

  • Hello Michael, sorry to hear your struggles with the chemo are not getting any easier and that the darned PSA is going the wrong way.  I hope you can have a useful and productive discussion with the oncologist next week and that she comes up with a good solution from her ‘box of tricks’.  Do let us know how you get on and sending you my best wishes and hugs x
