Therapy is relatively new type of radiotherapy which uses charged particles called ‘protons’ instead of ‘photons’ (X- Rays).

  • My husband had photon therapy to the pelvic area and then SBRT to distant mets so it was an academic search but I agree it is down to experience and I am good at investigating this, which is what I did with all my husband's consultants and the procedures he has been subjected to plus the drugs that he is on. In the UK I was accused of being an interfering wife by the GP and I did report him when he countermanded a consultants treatment on a financial basis. In Greece all treatment is consultant led and there is a lot more reliance on private health which works alongside the NHS so we have a greater say in our treatment and monitoring.

  • Hi !!

Not having really the scientific knowledge I suppose it sometimes comes down to cost benefit and I don’t really know if proton therapy costs more but i suppose so if it’s not ’standard of care treatment’ within the public healthcare.

With that, as you all understand from my bio, I also involve myself in my own treatment strategy and definitely don’t follow ’standard treatment pathways’ Slight smile

Like I said, I just wanted to share one of the first Level 1 phase III studies showing no difference between Proton and Photon for low / immediate risk prostate cancer and I think it’s good for those persons that perhaps don’t investigate as much as some of us other people; to know that, if you’re low / immediate risk you probably have equal results by having Photon therapy compared to Proton therapy.
