Just had my prostate biopsy result:
(T Stage 2, the cancer is contained inside the prostate.)
I now have to decide between two treatment options, either surgery, having the prostate removed or radiotherapy.
I would love to hear from men in both groups and what there experience has been.
Thank you.
Hi Great Dane.
I was diagnosed in May 2020 with a Gleason score of 9 (4+5) and T2B, cancer contained within the prostate. I was offered and accepted HT zoladex injections every 12 weeks (for life) since then and my PSA has consistently stayed around 1.o. I maybe lucky not to have suffered any side effects apart from occasional low days, and am surprised you were not offered this treatment. Is it worth discussing this option with your consultant I wonder?
Best wishes
Bas
Hi GD
I had stage 2 , cancer contained, had Radiotherapy in 2017, everything went OK.
In my mind there are potentially less side effects with the latest Radiotherapy . Surgery can produce ED and urinary issues, obviously not everyone is affected and some of the side effects do melt away over time but it is something to consider.
U don't give PSA or biopsy score but I presume low. If so then possibly active surveillance can be considered.
Best wishes
Steve
Hi Grundo,
Thank you very much for the reply.
My PSA is just over 3, grade group 2,
Gleason 7 (3+4) and 22 biopsies taken,
13 of which are cancerous.
I am pleased that the Radiotherapy went well for you and I will look into that, just a bit nervous about side effects.
Thanks again,
Hugo
I wouldn't worry too much about side effects from RT, generally they are short term and go away some weeks after treatment finishes.
Hormone therapy, if needed, can be more of an issue but not always
Steve
I had a robot assisted prostatectomy 2 months ago . No problems , psa undetectable. Still using pads when I go out , dry in the house . I chose this because of symptoms of enlarged prostate ( now sleep through night ) and a wish to avoid hormone therapy if at all possible .
If potential (probable ) ED is a major concern , then think carefully before surgery ,. It’s a very difficult choice , but both offer very good results. I don’t think zoladex ( as recommended above ) is regarded as a curative therapy . You need at least potentially curative treatment. Surgery or radiotherapy. Bill
Hi Bill,
Thank you very much for your reply.
I am very glad to hear about your successful prostatectomy.
I am leaning towards that solution myself, thinking when the prostate is out, so is the cancer.
May I ask you, will you eventually be able to pass urine normally, or will you always need pads?
You don't need to answer if it's too personal.
Thank you.
Hi GD . I expect full recovery . But I think it typically takes 4 months or so . I’m 69 so don’t expect miracles . My life is pretty much back to normal though , have been travelling in the campervan etc . It’s just little drips - it’s not like sudden ‘whoosh ‘ . I do my pelvic floor exercises like a good boy should .
