Hi,
I was recently diagnosed with a PSA of 24 and stage 3 locally advanced prostate cancer. A recent scan showed it hadn't spread, but the tumour is right on the edge of the prostate capsule, sso my consultant said that if |I opted for surgery, some surrounding tissue would be removed for analysis and that this might damage nerves resulting in anability to get an erection. So I'm veering tworads the radio therapy option. Has anyone had a similar situation?
Hi Rodknee
There are a couple on here, including myself, with a tumour on or very near the capsule edge.
We both went down the Radiotherapy route and the main reason for me was possible ED issues.
So my advice would be Radiotherapy but see what others say.
Best wishes
Steve
Hi Rodknee,
I was diagnosed at the end of July. Mine has broken through & affected the seminal tubes. I start a course of hormone tablets at the beginning of next month. After 2 weeks I have my first injection. I then have an injection every 3 months for a total of 3 years. In the new year I then start radiotherapy (37 sessions). My surgeon did say that if I wanted surgery he would only do it as a trial. Which made me think that he wasn’t happy to do it.
I hope this helps..
Hi Rodknee
I was in a very similar situation to you and chose the HT/RT route. Although surgery was offered, I am a very active person and was wary of the warnings that surgery could lead to stress incontinence when exercising.
I was on Prostap for three years and had my last injection in June so I'm now waiting for it to gradually leave my body so I can stop taking the anti-hot-flush medications.
Good luck with your journey and come back here with any questions as there will be somebody who has had the same experience.
Hi
I was in pretty much the same position as Tyler19, with similar HT route - although I am having only 2 years of Prostap injections.
I was only offered the RT route and when I asked why, I was told it was the best option for me.
I do appreciate that everyone is different but, as my journey so far is similar, hope my experience helps.
Regards
Stuart
Hi Rodknee,
I was unsuitable for surgery (I am glad in a way). That just left me with 2 options (HT & RT or do nothing). Not much of a choice really.
I don't think I would have went for the surgery.
Judging by the response already, it looks like HT&RT might be a good option.

Hi Tyler, thanks for the reply. At the first consultation, I was told that the probable recommendation would be RT/HT, but after the final scan I was offered both options, so that kind of threw me a bit. Having seen the scan of the tumour focused me like nothing else! I feel more at ease with the RT/HT route at the moment.
Regards, Rodknee.
Hi Stuart, thanks for your comments. I'm leaning towards the RT/HT option, will probably decide before the weekend.
Regards, Rodknee.
Hi Seamus 47, thanks for the comments. Interesting to hear your comment about the duration-I was told it would be 18 months. The incontinence was a worry for me with RT as the beam passes through other areas, but it seems the risk is low. Still doing some research, would like to make a final decision this week.
Regards, Rodknee.
Hi, I was given a choice between the two aswell, I wasn't pressured either way just given a booklet on each giving pros and cons to both treatments, worth a read if you can get hold of them. In the end I went for radiotherapy . But ultimately its a judgement call for yourself which only you can decide
