Hi All,
I am new here and newly diagnosed with prostate cancer. I have been informed that HIFU may be a treatment option for me so I am wondering if anyone on here has been through this and would be willing to share their experience?
Any advice around how to make decisions regarding treatment is also welcomed.
Many thanks
Charles
Hi Charles
There are a couple of people on here who have had hi Fu.
Quite a bit depends on your stats ie: lowish PSa , Gleeson, tumour contained. Also not sure that there are long term success rates for hi Fu available.
Hopefully someone will post who has had the treatment
Best wishes
Steve
A lot depends on the stage of your cancer and your age.
HIFU is not a 'cure' (there is zero evidence of this though some patients are told it's a cure), though successive treatments will often postpone the need for conventional treatment for some years, and HIFU offers a much better side effects profile than most PCa treatments. So if you have a cancer that has been described at 'curable', it would usually make more sense to choose a treatment that is potentially curative.
There is undoubtedly a place for HIFU, definitely for elderly men, who may be able to postpone recurrence for years, and for those unfit for surgery or the rigours of radiotherapy and hormone therapy. There is also a case for a younger man, who can enjoy a respite before committing to full treatment (but there are risks attached).
Of course with prostate cancer, like many other cancers, you may never know that you're cured, even if you are - but a 'full remission' comes a close second. And for that your options must include surgery or radiotherapy.

Hi Charles I too have been looking at Hifu, however my Consultant would only offer Radical Prostatectomy or Radio Theraphy. i contacted Paul Sayer from Prost8 and he arranged a consultantaion over the phone with a specialist at Charing Cross Imperial Hospital Trust. He arranged for me to have another MRI scan as my Hospital didnt provide suffiencent quality for them to decide on how much cancer there was. I am now being offered Cyrotheraphy and am awaiting an appointment for this to go ahead.
All I can say to anyone is it's your body your life you have every right to fight to get the treatment you want.
Good luck
Quite right, and you should fight for the treatment you want.
But the difference is that removal of the prostate or radiotherapy MAY cure your cancer (assuming it is a curable cancer).
HIFU will NOT cure it, even the HIFU people don't claim that it will. And when the cancer returns to the point when HIFU will no longer hold it, it may no longer be a curable cancer.
