Opioid use and laxatives

My partner had bad constipation after starting using oramorph; the GP prescribed laxido (osmotic laxative) to clear it, and to then take it regularly to prevent the problem recurring. P had a BM on Sunday (1st for a week), and since then has had soft/watery stools. Is this still from the previous episode or could it be leakage round another blockage? I don't know when to restart the laxative - I don't want to give him diarrhoea, but equally I don't want another blockage to build up because I haven't restarted the laxido. I've left a message for the hospice outreach team for advice but haven't heard back as yet. Any advice would be welcome!

  • Sorry, but it could be 'bypassing' and it could be that he doesn't need so much laxative ... or it could be something else (infection, reaction to diet, etc.) It's not the kind of thing you can be specific about over the ether. Chase up the hospice team - or contact your GP.

    Good Luck!

If I can't beat this, I'm going for the draw.

Meanwhile, my priority is to live while I have the option.

That's my problem - not knowing if starting the laxative again will make things better or worse! Still nothing from the hospice nurse....I'll chase them up.......(a little later) - just spoken to the outreach nurse, she says it's best to restart the laxative..if it should give him the runs, we stop again - pretty obvious, looked at like that!
