Newly diagnosed.  PSA 5.2.  Pi-Rads 3.  Gleason score 3+3 on the right side, 3+4 on the left.  Oh, 57 years old.

What I gather to be the usual range of treatment options has been offered and discussed.  The one I'm keen to gather information and knowledge on is low dose brachytherapy.

Is anyone to offer any opinions/report any experiences of this course of treatment?

Thanks, all.

  • Hi Dogfather and welcome

Looks like u have a slow growing cancer with those figures. That's good news.

I had external beam Radiotherapy in 2017, all went well.

I have read quite a lot about low dose and high dose brachy, they both look good options, a good alternative to external beam.

Hopefully someone will post who has had brachy.

    Good luck

    Steve

  • Figures look promising, Do you know if it’s contained within the prostrate?

I think all options would be available, perhaps you need to ask your consultant longer term effects of brachytherapy

  • Hello YoungMan.  Yes, contained with the prostate.  All options are indeed available, but low dose brachytherapy was recommended as being suitable in this case and, from what I can see, the side effects look moderate and manageable.  I'm a competitive archer and spend a lot of time outdoors and with very limited access to toilet facilities, so avoiding continence issues has a huge appeal to me.  Hence, I'm keen to hear from anyone who's gone down this treatment route.

  • My brother had brachytherapy a couple of years ago and did have some problems with continence afterwards but that did disappear with time - I am not sure how long it lasted but it wasn't long and hew as given medication to help - I think the first lot of medication didn't work too well for him so he was put on a different medication which then worked well so would imagine with that it lasted 3 months before the medication worked well.
