Im 59 years of age and I have to go in as a day patient for a biopsy and to be honest I'm scared and frightened about whole procedure. I had a blood test and my psa, levels came back 14.9. Was then booked in for appointment for mri scan and an appointment with a urologist in out patients which I have had. Can anyone reassure me about the procedure as I'm also worried about possible side effects and not being able to pee afterwards.
Hi
The actual procedure is more about your dignity, but it does not take long, afterwards there may be a little bleeding, but nothing serious, you should be fine the next day or two. It’s rare it affects you urinating although they will tell you this.
Hope that helps.
Stay safe
Joe
Hi
As you will be a day patient sounds like the procedure will be given under general which from my experience is the way to go. Either way as Joe says it's more about your dignity.
I had a little bleeding when urinating for a day or two but nothing else.
Hope all goes well.
Stuart
Don't worry about the biopsy. If my experience is anything to go by there will very little discomfort at all. Just a slight nipping sensation. If it was a choice between another biopsy and a visit to the dentist I'd go for the former every time. Afterwards you may be given something to drink so that they can check that the waterworks have not been affected. It will tidier for you and your laundry basket if you urinate sitting down.
I was about your age when I was diagnosed. It was scary. There were tears. Had the da Vinci. Psa since undetectable. I'm still working. I still have a love life. And to be honest I don't really think about my prostate cancer that much. Better things to do.
Chin up brother.
Hi Reaching 60
Yes, it is all a bit daunting due to the fear of the unknown the procedure doesn't take very long and I have to say that I had no side effects at all. Mine was done under a local anesthetic. It is a little uncomfortable at times and, as Joeven says, it's more a matter of dignity which us men often have a problem with!!
Best of luck.
Thanks for reply. Had procedure done under local anesthetic. Procedure itself was ok just the adminstring of anesthetic that was bit uncomfortable. Had bleeding for couple of days but seems to be settling down. Just waiting game now for results.
