Hi,

My dad has recently been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and hasn't started his treatment yet

  • Hi

I'm sorry to read that your dad has pancreatic cancer and I know how daunting this must seem as my husband has also been diagnosed with this type of cancer.

Does your dad know what treatment he is having? If so, please let us know so that we can share our experiences of that type of treatment with you.

  • Thankyou for your kind words latchbrook. They are aiming towards chemo as the tumour is inoperable. But he needs to gain weight and reduce his hemaroids first. I am giving him the right food and he's on steroids to increase his appetite, but he still struggles to eat

  • I have had my first chemo for advanced pancreatic cancer. The treatment is palliative only.

The cancer prevents the digestion of vital nutrients and I lost about a stone in weight but was fit and no complications. After jaundice I had a stent fitted which has opened the bile duct.

Prior to that it helped a little to have a cold fizzy drink before breakfast; appleizer. I also couldn’t face dry foods to porridge with lots of full fat milk and gravy with vegetables. I needed more fluid but it can fill you up, so maybe after the meal.

Now I eat more cheeses, eggs and upped  the protein.

Alas the chemo may send me back and take away my appetite. Tomorrow is literally another day.

i hope you both will feel greater support, but this an aggressive cancer and by the time we show the symptoms it’s not operable. Try when you can to enjoy, and for me weeping and sharing those weepy hugs helps .

  • My husband's tumour is currently inoperable as it's too close to a major blood vessel. He had FOLFIRINOX chemotherapy, 6 cycles over 12 weeks, to try and shrink the tumour away from the blood vessel but it's still stubbornly there.

If your father is struggling to eat you might find this information from Macmillan helpful.

I hope he's able to gain the weight he needs to start chemo.

    ((hugs))

  • My dad was taken into hospital on Sunday, he developed diabetic ketoacidosis and has declined alot as a result. Yesterday myself and my sister made the difficult decision of him not being resuscitated should that be needed. His oncology appointment has been moved forward, everyone is being kind. So. I am crying alot as he named me as his next of kin

  • Hi Dylan

Unfortunately my dad still isn't gaining weight and at this moment in time is in hospital recovering from DKA

Thankyou for reaching out, this means alot

  • I am so sorry to read this

Sending you, your sister and dad lots of (((hugs)))
