Dear community
i am new here and I think this may be my new community. Thank you in advance for reading my query.
I had bowel cancer last year and an operation in June removed the tumour stage 2 with no lymph’s or nodes impacted.
Re operation in October for bowel obstruction and hernia.
cea levels progress from 4.8 to 3.8 and remained static.
Two weeks ago i had endoscopy and gastroscopy and 2 polyps removed.
Ct scans showed pancreatic cysts and some lesions on liver. This did not seem to worry the colorectal team who said they would monitor yearly. I have just had a Ca 19-9 test done privately by my gynae who thought prudent to run wider test and ca 19-9 which shows slightly elevated levels of 29 and above normal levels of 27.mum died of pancreatic cancer at same age of 61-62 as me so I jump to conclusion that history is repeating itself. Gynae said repeat test in a month.
i would like to ask the community for suggestions on what I ask my colorectal team at nhs or my gynae and if anything what I could ask of bupa as I have cover with them too. Eg. Should I push for more scans , tests etc. Should I push nhs for a chat. (I have just informed team at nhs by email). I want to see if I can have a better outcome than mum if I get in there early as she was stage 4 when diagnosed with tail touching liver.
Suggestions and experiences welcome. Many thanks
Certainly no expert but ca19-9 level of 29 (to me) is fine. When first diagnosed with pancreatic cancer my level was in the ‘000’s and even after chemo is still in the high hundreds.
I suggest you do not get too anxious about current level and have the next test, or even 2/3 tests.
Like PSA levels for prostate cancer the trend is more important than an individual reading.
29 may well be your ‘level’. I thought below 37 was an acceptable figure.
Thank you Iggy for responding - it has given me a kick up the backside and engaged the rational part of me. I’ve gone down that Google rabbit hole reading all research papers and working myself up into a right old state since I posted. The CA19-9 test I had was modular Roche which is o-37 range. I didn’t know it could go into the thousands Is that the same one you have had. I have pancreatic cysts and lesions on liver found from scans but not considered worrying in June 2022.
My next test is in 2 weeks. I have none of the symptoms that would cause an elevation except a non alcoholic fatty liver perhaps. Having had cancer and mum had pancreatic cancer diagnosed at stage 4 inoperable the anxiety is always there either under the surface or at the surface.
I have joined MyFitness pal premium version and will be extra cautious on foods to monitor. There are no biscuits, cakes or sweets left in the house - to which I was partial daily. It will be tough but I need to try everything.
THank you so much for taking the time ️
