Platelet count

My husband is undergoing chemotherapy for pancreatic cancer. He had 10 sessions-one every 2 weeks. They take a blood test before the session and today his Platelet count was 66  (last time it was 88) and the doctor wanted us to postpone the chemo for one more week. Is there anything we can do or should we just wait for the Platelet to raise by itself? Thanks

Laura

  • Hi Laura,

My FIL also had his postponed when undergoing chemo last year (other type of gastro cancer) . That short postponement (I think about a week also) gave him enough time to stop feeling so ill and get a bit of hydration and strength back before recommencing his chemo. I don't think that week pause did any harm and certainly made him stronger to cope with the next session. Because the level of sickness and recovery period increased slightly with each course of chemo, the break was probably needed to help his body get through the impact.

Rest and the chance for rehydration during that break in sessions after the chemo sickness really helped him.

I hope that helps reassure you that postponement isn't unusual.

    Wishing you all the best
