Hello,
Im new here. My mum was diagnosed with a tumour on the tail of her pancreas back in June..she has since undergone a distal pancreatectomy and has also had her spleen removed. The surgeon was happy the operation went well but out of 10 lymph nodes tested 3 showed cancer cells. Because of this she started 12 rounds of chemo (florfironox) on Monday. It is administered for 2 days through a portal inserted under her skin and then she has a rest for 12 days... obviously it's early days and so far she hasn't been unwell..I'm just wondering has anybody else had this treatment and wonder how it has gone for then .thanks
Hi there, welcome.
My Dad had Folfirinox a couple of years ago, following the whipple operation. 4 out of 24 of his lymphs were positive.
He recovered well and completed 10 out of 12 cycles, stopping slightly early as he kept having probs with very low platelets.
He had weekly cycle then a pump and an injection given at home.
Fast forward two years and during that time doing well, gaining weight and feeling pretty ok. He had a recurrence in the spring of this year, so now back on a gentler form of chemo, Abraxane and Gemzar. The recurrence is in lymph nodes not directly around the pancreas, but in the vicinity, called para-aortic lymph nodes. Also a tiny spot on his lung. He has a separate kidney tumour.
Coping very well currently, but its a day by day process.
Folfirinox is pretty heavy duty and tends to be the belt and braces chemo with PC.
I hope she responds and copes well with it, I assume she will have a scan to see how it is working?
Its stressful not knowing how things are looking internally and the waiting game.
I hope this helps, keep us updated xx
Thanks you for your reply...we have had a pretty tough weekend, I'm not sure if she I'll tolerate Folfirinox. She has been very ill we've had to have the doctor down twice to administer an anti nausea injection as meds weren't working. Today she was worse so had to call for an ambulance, thankfully the paramedics administered fluids at home along with another anti nausea injection. It seemed to help somewhat, she was able to keep water down bit still not great. I will speak with her oncology nurse Tomo morning, they are only avail Mon to Friday. I'm hoping she gets some relief.
Hi Dex17
Thanks for your reply and I'm sorry to hear that your mum has had a rough weekend. I'm glad however she didn't need to go into hospital.
Yes in order to tolerate Folfirinox, you need to have some resilience as its pretty gruelling, I wonder if they will now opt for a gentler chemo?
x
Unfortunately today she did have to be admitted to hospital as her condition worsened. Obviously because of covid I couldn't go with her but somebody from the oncology team called me and said they are going to keep her in a few days to rehydrate her and get the nausea under control. They will give her a little break before the next round, which should be Monday and has said they will make some alterations to the chemo along with having a better handle on the nausea, so fingers crossed all goes well x
Oh no, sorry this has happened. Hope she starts to feel better and will be back soon x
