Tumor stable but ...

My mum had a scan on Saturday following 6 rounds of chemo, we had the results yesterday but not great.

It shows a 1cm increase in the tumor although the Dr suspects that may have happened in the 2 month period we were waiting for chemo to start. But the fact is it has not done as hoped and shrank the tumor to be able to resect and the chemo has be making my mum so ill she has had no quality of life the last few months and does not want to continue.

Dr has said can do radiotherapy but this is either in Oxford (we are in South devon) but she is unlikely to meet criteria, or localy but will be every day for 5 weeks. Which means she can't go far or do anything. They said that it is not as severe as the chemo but they said the chemo is not that severe so....

She is going to give it a few weeks and get her strength back a bit, her sister is coming to visit for Australia beginning of August and it is her 70th in September and want to make sure it's special.

But otherwise I just feel lost I don't know what's going to happen. They cannot predict how long it will take for the tumor to start to grow again and or spread. I don't know how to live life with this hanging over our heads.

  • Hi

I'm sorry to read that the chemo your mum has had recently has not had the desired effect on her tumour and it's natural to feel as you do.

I haven't been in your position, as I was the one with cancer, so I hope you don't mind me suggesting that you also join and post in the family and friends group, which is a safe and supportive place to discuss your worries and emotions.

If this is something that you'd like to do, clicking on the link I've created will take you straight there. You can then join and start a new post in the same way as you did here, and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.

It would be great if you could pop something about about your mum's diagnosis and treatment so far into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

  • Hello Lanamer

I'm sorry to hear about your mum.

Results from chemo are very unpredictable. Some people find that the tumour decreases but others do not. And, as you say, medics cannot predict if or when it will begin to grow.

Having been in your position of supporting someone with pancreatic cancer my advice is to take one day at a time and not think about what might happen. Easier to say than do, I know. But overall, I think it the best way.
