About to be diagnosed with ovarian cancer and just a bit overwhelmed right now.

Hi, I'm just at the very start of what seems to be a journey with ovarian cancer. After months of abdominal pain, ultrasounds, bloods, etc, they have seen a new cyst on one of my ovaries.

A follow up CT scan shows the edges have changed from an ultrasound a few weeks earlier, so they're treating it as cancer right now.

I'm due to have a guided biopsy on the 20th, but my consultant team are saying that's not soon enough.

Today I had a pre-op for surgery (I think for a total hysterectomy) which they will also use if I can get an earlier surgical biopsy slot.

On Monday I have a meeting with my Gynae-Oncology Surgeon and am hoping to get a little more clarity about what, why, and when.

It's all a bit bonkers tbh.

We're moving house on the 14th (thankfully just 15 minutes up the road and will be next door to my amazing sister and family) and just found out today that our 16yo's major knee surgery is now not going to be for 12-18 months and we're heartbroken for her.

Just to say I was introduced to my amazing Macmillan nurse last week and I'm so glad to have found this community early on in my journey

  • Hi, so sorry you find yourself in this situation, you certainly do have a lot to cope with. It’s such a whirlwind time going through diagnosis, many appointments and lots of information to process on top of surgery. It does sound like things are moving fast which I imagine scary but it’s good that there are no delays. I would suggest taking someone with you to appointments and make a list of questions you would like answered before your appointment. You probably already have this in hand. Take care, one day at a time. I was diagnosed jan 24 , after surgery and chemotherapy doing really well one year on. X

  • So sorry you are going through this.  It's a lot to deal with, especially if you are supporting your family at the same time.  I'd definitely take someone with you to all appointments because there is so much information imparted that it can be difficult to remember it all later.  I had ovarian cancer diagnosed last January and after chemo and surgery am in remission now.  It was a totally structured process datewise and you will get through it, hopefully, like clockwork.  Take each day as it comes, you won't know what you'll feel like so don't pressurise yourself.

I think these forums are a wonderful way of gaining advice and reassurance.  Good luck friend!

  • Thanks so much! Whirlwind is the perfect way to describe what’s going on right now. Going in for surgery this week and we go from there. At least I’ll be coming home to our new house with everything moved in!

  • Taking one day at a time seems to be key, thank you Spooks! Yes, am relieved to find other people further down a similar road who are doing well. It’s so hard to not go to worst case scenarios at this point.
