Hi, my Mum is starting chemo this week for ovarian cancer and I'm staying with her for a while. I know some things I have read, but I wondered if anyone would be willing to share what the side effects are really like? I want to be prepared for whatever may happen so that I can do my best to support her. At the moment I just really don't know what to expect.

The hair thing is covered though: she's already decided that she'd rather lose her hair than wear a cold cap for seven hours! So I'm knitting her hats!

She's in her early 70s if that's relevant. She'll be on IV and then tablets for three days repeating every three weeks. I don't know the names of any of the drugs yet.

Thank you

The reality is that none of us know what to expect and it’s best to take it day by day. From what you’ve said about her treatment schedule, it is like my first chemo which was carboplatin and placitexal (always forget how to spell them!). I did the cold cap so had no hair loss on my head but lost body and facial hair. Some people are really wiped out for the first week but I maintained a level of tiredness that felt like exhaustion if I’d done too much. I was still working. I had one bad mouth ulcer and lost my appetite. I had a blood clot but was already on blood thinners for DVT so probably more prone to it. I had a slight swelling in one arm that last 2 days and was the opposite arm to where I had had my IV.

My oncologist said not to expect to have side effects as everyone reacts differently. The key is take it day by day and if in doubt, call the emergency number. The nurses are brilliant. I wish your mum and you well. Don’t forget to look after yourself.
