New here and a bit lost, don't know where I stand.

I had a CT scan last year which showed a large mass attached to right ovary. In 2009 I had a total Hysterectomy with both tubes and ovaries removed as I had severe endometriosis. This threw everyone as the mass was growing on something. In January I saw a  Gynae Oncologist and she had a Macmillan nurse with her. The doctor had the Hysterectomy report and it seems the right ovary was difficult to remove. I'm not sure what was removed but something was left for endometriosis to grow until this February when I had a Laparotomy to remove a football sized mass plus an ovary. Samples were taken on 26th February but up to now I've had no results. In a phone call 2 weeks ago I was told there was going to be a MDT meeting about my results and I would have to wait another 2 weeks, which was today. Still nothing and my Consultant has left so I can't contact her for help.  I am 70 and totally unprepared for this.  The Consultant said it was a very long operation as she needed to get the mass out whole. She obviously couldn't be definite but she said she wasn't too worried about the mass but the ovary was not in a good condition and was in a dirty liquid.  Sorry for the long post but I am so anxious, and if I'm honest angry that I had a piece of ovary I knew nothing about which was growing a huge mass for years causing me to have major surgery at 70. Now a month on I still don't know what's coming next.

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

I'm not a member of this forum but noticed that your post hadn't had any replies from the forum members yet. Responding to you will 'bump' it back to the top of the discussion list again.

You say that you "can't contact your consultant for help" but you should have been allocated a cancer nurse specialist (CNS), sometimes referred to as a key worker or Macmillan nurse, who will be able to let you know what's happening next. If you haven't been allocated a CNS, then give your consultant's secretary a call and she should be able to put you in touch with the CNS or help you herself.

    ((hugs))

  • Thank you for replying. My Consultant was leaving just a few days after my op. I spoke to a secretary yesterday who looked up what was on the computer. The MDT have discussed my results and are Tring to find me a clinic slot. I didn't ask about test results as its not her job to give out that kind of information and could have got her into trouble.  I don't know if this is a post op check or something else. When I had my first appointment with the Consultant there was a MacMillan Nurse present but I don't like to bother her, it wasn't clear what her role was or if she would know my results.

  • Ps, feeling old and pathetic, normally pro active but this has really knocked me.

  • Hi

You were right not to ask the secretary about your results. She wouldn't have been allowed to give them as, not being medically trained, she can't answer any questions you might have.

Please don't think that asking the Macmillan nurse about what happens next would be thought of as bothering her. Her role is to answer any questions you might have and to liaise between you and your consultant.

I hope you don't have too much longer to wait to find out what the MDT think will be the best course of action.

  • I have always found Macmillan nurses in the hospital setting very helpful. In the absence of any other communication, I would try to call today or tomorrow (before the Easter weekend kicks in).

  • Thank you so much to everyone who has replied. I have a card given to me at the appointment in January by a MacMillan Nurse who was really kind, but my mind is telling me that unless I have test results showing a malignancy I'm taking her time away from her " real" patients. I can also see that's not true but at the moment my thoughts are all over the place. I have e mailed her so she can get back to me when it's convenient. I am so grateful for the replies that have got me pro active instead of just having a moan!
