Hi everyone,

nice to meet you, I came into hospital on Wednesday last week with what I thought was something bowel related and what my GP thought was appendicitis. They did a CT scans and saw 2 cysts - one in each ovary. The blood test/marker thing they do was raised at about 290. Doctor today put a slightly more positive spin on things whereas other two said it was pointing in direction on cancer but they need more info. Was told that it would go to MDT on Thursday and then they wotodcdo a biopsy and then decide what to do. Doctor today said the complete opposite! He said don’t tend to do biopsies first and most likely next step is to operate and do a full hysterectomy. Then they do a biopsy at the time. Then they tell me results and they tell me  if any other treatment needed. It’s such a rollercoaster. But the doctor today was so helpful and I feel a little better knowing next steps a bit clearer.
Is this typical other people’s experience?
Doctor today said the raised marker can be caused by a few things, especially before menopause. So time will tell I guess. Seems to be a lot of waiting at this time and a bit of a rollercoaster of emotions.
Thanks for reading…

  • Forgot to say the cysts are not just fluid that have solid material in them - which is what they said made them concerned

  • Hi

Each case is different but every case has the waiting and the unknown unfortunately, my ca 125 was 2580 when u was diagnosed in 2021, now i have recurrence and ca 125 was 63, so ca 125 us a marker but not the gospel.

I was told it was cancer straight away so not sure what happens in your.case

    Keep positive

    Take care Pam x

  • Hi, my story played out very similar to yours. After seeing my gp for what i now realise was classic ovarisn cancer symptoms,  I first did a positive bowel cancer fit test  which coupled with my symptoms got me an urgent cancer referral.  My bloods showed ca125 at 62. A ct scan showed a huge mass coming from my ovaries all the way up to my ribs. Consultant said it could be a massive cyst as ca125 was elevated, but not really high. But not to get false Hope as they were treating it as suspected cancer. They recommended surgery to remove mass and full hysterectomy. The drs told me the morning after surgery thst it was definitely tumours they removed and it looked cancerous. They told me it would be 3 weeks wait for the test results, but it actually took 6 weeks! Mine turned out to be stage 3 ovarian cancer. I've just finished 6 rounds of chemo and now there's no visible signs of cancer in my latest ct scan. The best advise I can give you is try not to dwell on what might be while you're waiting for the results. Xx

  • Hi Pam, thanks to much for taking the time to reply. Yes I’ve heard that people can have results in their thousands. I’m sorry to hear you have a recurrence. How are you feeling?

  • Hi there, thank you for sharing your story. How long ago was it you were first diagnosed? Gosh 6 rounds, thst sounds tough. I’m so pleased to hear you are clear. That’s great news.
thanks for the good advice about not dwelling on what might be. At the moment I’m pain free and relieved to be out of hospital. I feel I should make the mort of this time.
How were you during your treatment and can I ask what yo did about work?
    Thanks!

  • I first went to the gp in Jan this year, had my surgery in Feb, got the results late march/early April. Started chemo in April and finished in Aug. They advised me not to work during chemo. The first couple were OK, but they get gradually worse. The last few were like a 4 day hangover. I feel like i was quite lucky and got through chemo fairly easily, i didnt have any major issues with my bloods, I was treated with carboplatin and didn't lose any hair, which I think makes a huge difference to how i coped with it all. Its overwhelming enough as it is! I just started back at work this week and that's going OK too, I'm easing back in with 4hr shifts to start.

I honestly hope everything goes well for you. Fingers crossed for cysts, but if its not, you can do this. Xx

  • Thanks so much. It’s so helpful to hear the timescales. Gosh that’s quite a long time for results? Is that usual?  The chemo sounds like a long haul. I’m so glad you’re through it and phasing back to work. Aldo great that you didn’t lose your hair.
I should hear tomorrow the results of the mdt meeting.
Thanks so much for sharing your experiences xx

  • I was told it would be 3 weeks for the results (which felt long enough) but it ended up being 6 weeks due to a backlog in the lab. I've no idea what the normal time frame is though I'm afraid.

  • Hi again. Can I ask how was the operation? Was it hard to recover  from? Thanks  x

  • Hello! So sorry to message. I just wondered how you got on? I’m in a similar situation! Disappointed
