Hi I just found this group and am grateful.  I am 67 years old (young) found out three months ago I have stage 4B ovarian cancer. I was supposed to have three chemo treatments, surgery then three more chemos.  I cancelled the surgery because I wanted to do some research. I have continued to have chemo and have my last one in a couple weeks. I have to decide on debunking surgery. I know they have to do a total hysterectomy, remove fallopian tubes, remove omentum, also the spleen. But I do not want them to touch my intestines, or bowl re-sectioning, or anything the could cause a colostomy or type of ostomy.  I am healthy, have had great results with chemo (tumor down from 10.4 to 4.9, no chemo side effects).  I am thinking either to do the "sub-optimal" surgery (as they call it) or just go enjoy my life because I feel so good. I don't know how much of a survival time frame they can give me going with one or the other of those two.  Lots of concerns.  I am scheduled on Tuesday to sign papers for surgery, but I'm still undecided.

  • Hi

I hope you don’t mind me responding as I didn’t have ovarian cancer, but recurrent cervical cancer. I did however have a total pelvic exenteration almost 3 years ago which resulted in 2 stomas-a urostomy and colostomy and the loss of my complete reproductive system amongst other things! You can read my story if you click on my name. I wondered if you felt able to share why you are so against having any form of stoma? Mine have saved my life so I am forever grateful for them. Obviously you don’t need to answer if this is too personal, but I have never regretted my surgery which successfully removed all my cancer.

Whatever you decide on is a very personal choice of course, and I wish you well with coming to that difficult decision.

  • Hi Beglad2,

I hope this is going to you, as I find this site hard to use and kept sending messages to the wrong people (duh), so have not tried for a good few months. Anyway, cross fingers.

I was diagnosed in June with stage 3C ovarian cancer, which had spread to my stomach (I am 61 by the way). I have just completed my final (6th) chemo cycle for the moment and had a debulking op after 4 cycles. Despite a lot of pain and difficulty caused by the cancer lying on my bowel, once they opened me up, there was no cancer remaining there, so no need for the stoma I was expecting. I understand your concerns and making decisions can be difficult, but am greatly relieved to know that for the moment there is no visible cancer remaining. I also had a full hysterectomy along with removal of fallopian tubes, cervix and omentum, but would have had the stoma etc if necessary, as I know many people with stomas who lead full and active lives.

However, we are all different and deal with the disease and treatments differently along with leading different lives etc, so I hope that your surgeon and oncologist will give you all the advice you need and answer your questions for you to make an informed decision. I turned up with a list as long as my arm. Lol. At the end of the day, it is your life and your decision to make, regardless of what anyone thinks or says and I pray that you will be guided to make the right one for you.

I hope that I have not spoken out of turn and wish you the very best, whatever decision you make.

    Kind regards and hugs

    Kaye (Fatface)  xx
