Hi all

I am new to this group but looking for any advice/support anyone can offer to help me come to terms with mums diagnosis.

Found out 5 weeks ago mum has advanced ovarian cancer that has spread to peritonea and liver. I’m out of my mind I really don’t know where to turn. She has been offered palliative chemo which she is refusing as she doesn’t want to be ill with the effects. What exactly is palliative chemo? So basically she is now having palliative care by her doctor. I haven’t been given any life expectancy so not sure what to expect going forward? Has anyone been through similar and can share their experiences of maybe what to expect and how I can support my mum. My world is upside down as I am the only child she has since losing my brother 2 years ago.

Thankyou xxx

  • Hi  and welcome to the Online Community. I'm sorry to read your Mum has recently been diagnosed with advanced Ovarian cancer. At times such as these we don't know which way to turn but by joining this forum and also the Family and Friends groups you'll get support and answers to your questions.

I'm not actually from this group as I have a different type of cancer, but I do know Palliative chemotherapy is a type of chemo that shrinks tumours, reduces the distressing symptoms caused by the cancer and helps you live longer. Nowadays the side effects such as nausea are better treated by anti-sickness drugs.

It might also be helpful to take a look at Supporting some with incurable cancer. forum.

It’s always helpful to others if you write a little something (or a lot) about yourself and your journey to date. You can enter it into your profile (click on your username and select “Profile”) It’s helpful to other members with a similar diagnosis who can then hopefully answer your questions. It also means that you don't have to keep writing the same thing over and over. You can amend or update it at any time.

To find more information covering diagnosis and treatments there are pages covering most types of cancers which can be found on our Online Information and Support Section

The Macmillan Support Services also offer lots of information, support, financial guidance or just someone to listen. It’s free to call 0808 808 0000. Most services are available 8am to 8pm, 7 days a week. Have a look by Clicking here to see what is available and we also have our Ask an Expert section, but do allow two to three working days for replies from our expert team.

Sending you welcoming hugs B xx
